PST: Mata amazing in Chelsea's victory

Man of the Match: In one of the season?s best games, Juan Mata gave one of the campaign?s best individual performances. Two nice second half finishes turned a 2-1 Blues deficit into a 3-2 lead, with a great individual effort to strip Kyle Walker and set up Daniel Sturridge producing the match?s final goal. On a night where Chelsea?s other attackers failed to make their mark, Mata led his team to big derby victory.

Packaged for takeaway:

  • Coming off another impressive London derby performance, Chelsea provided more proof that last season?s sixth place finish was an aberration (not part of a trend). They were exactly as good as the final score. Their vulnerability in defense combined with a potency going forward that led to great Saturday morning entertainment.
  • How much John Terry?s absence had to do with that vulnerability will be debated (or, perhaps overshadowed by the four goals). The captain started his four-game suspension today, with Gary Cahill sliding into the starting XI. By now, he and partner David Luiz are familiar with each other, which makes it more difficult to explain why Spurs looked to capable of moving through them at any time in the second half.
  • In the first half, though, Chelsea was able to dictate how the game was played, getting an early goal from Cahill to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. Though most of the first period, Chelsea held a three-to-two possession advantage.
  • Their only goal, however, came on a mistake by William Gallas, whose weak clearance fell right to Cahill just above the circle. The England international volleyed into the top of the goal, giving Brad Friedel (back in the starting XI) no chance to prevent the opener.
  • The game changed at halftime. Spurs came out a different team. They dominated play, getting goals from Gallas and Jermain Defoe within nine minutes of the whistle. Though those would be their final goals of the match, they?d go on to outshoot Chelsea 15-6 over the game?s final 45 minutes.
  • For Chelsea, however, it was all about execution, converting on three of their last six shots. More accurately, it was all about Juan Mata?s execution. The Spaniard?s equalizer camw off another terrible clearance for Gallas, while the game winning goal featured a nice near-post finish of an Eden Hazard pass, Mata making a good run to get behind Gallas.
  • Those defensive breakdowns are going to obscure the fact that Spurs performed relatively well, particularly with Gareth Bale and Moussa Demb?l? unavailable. He both men been at Andre Villas-Boas?s disposal, Spurs may have been able to keep up in a shootout. On Saturday, however, they needed one more threat.?Clint Dempsey and Gylfi Sigurdsson provided minimal contributions.
  • Without it, Spurs fell victim to what?s becoming Chelsea?s?modus operandi ? being carried by one of their attackers. Early in the season, it was Eden Hazard. We saw Oscar do it against Juventus. Today, it was Mata. At any point, one of those players can step up, control a game, and lead Chelsea to victory, even when they?re facing the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham.
  • Spurs need to get their defense back. They need Younes Kaboul healthy. They need Benoit Assou-Ekotto healthy. They need the ability to bench Gallas or Kyle Walker.
  • The only concerns for Chelsea: Their defense and their inability to prove more dangerous with the possession they had in the first half. Will this team always be at its best on the counter, when they can play a game that protects that defense? And if so, will they always be in danger of replicating the Juventus game?

So what exactly do they suspect these bacteria have been eating down there in the deep dark cold?

Cthulhu has been feeding them bits of the Snickers bar he was given as campaign contribution... Or perhaps he's been feeding them bits of the campaign contributors themselves.

But seriously, a background of 10 critters / cc isn't all that 'clean' and

Bulat and his colleagues counted the microbes present in the ice sample and checked their genetic makeup to figure out the phylotypes. They counted fewer than 10 microbes/ml ? about the same magnitude they would expect to find in the background in their clean room. And three of the four phylotypes they identified matched contaminants from the drilling oil, with the fourth unknown but also most likely from the lubricant.

points to one of the bigger concerns about this experiment - you are going to contaminate the lake at this point as the drilling technology is pretty primitive - basically pouring hot water into a hole.

Tackling the Health & Wellness of Eleutherans - One Eleuthera?s Step Up to Health: 6 Weeks to Wellness/ Fitness Boot Camp Comes to a Conclusion

Eleuthera, Bahamas -- The One Eleuthera?s Foundation, in collaboration with cosponsors The Cancer Society of Eleuthera,e commenced ?Step Up to Health: 6 Weeks to Wellness/Fitness Boot Camp? September 10th and 11th with two sessions, one held in South Eleuthera at Preston H. Albury High School?s Track in Rock Sound and another in Central Eleuthera at the Cancer Society?s Wellness Center in Palmetto Point. The boot camp was led by Nurse Bianca Edwards, Mrs Tamara Moncur and Mr Brian Babbs.

Six Weeks to Wellness received an overwhelming response of more than 100 participants from various communities who were all enthused about taking on such a challenge. These persons were then divided into teams who worked together for the duration of the boot camp.

The program, part of One Eleuthera?s Health Initiative goal of ?reversing the trends? by promoting healthy lifestyle changes, focused on children and adults that may suffer from ailments such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, gout, arthritis, insomnia, thyroid disease, lupus, fibroids and/or polycystic ovarian syndrome and a host of other health issues.? Aerobics, nutritional counselling, body weight exercises, crunches, endurance exercises, skipping, weight lifting, abdominal exercises and other activities were incorporated. The intent was to enable participants to adopt healthy self-management behaviours, reverse disease trends and create a healthier community through diet, exercise and healthy lifestyle changes.

On October 14th, 2012 a healthy special luncheon and cooking demo was held by One Eleuthera?s Step Up to Health program at Pascal's Caribbean Fusion in Rock Sound. Special guest, Raw on Da Porch?s very own Christina "Chrissy Love" Thompson taught participants how to prepare healthy meals made from alkaline products. Dishes included quinoa pasta, green salad, chickpea patties and green smoothie shots.

Boot camp concluded with a closing ceremony, held at the Church of Christ, Rock Sound where participants reflected on the past weeks, sharing their successes, downfalls and willingness to continue the lifestyle changes they have incorporated over the program period. This assisted in boosting their confidence and that of their peers.

Nurse Bianca Edwards, mastermind behind the whole program and Ministry of Health?s Employee of the Year 2012-2013, encouraged persons to press forward and continue with their regiment from the past six weeks. ?It is important to decrease the consumption of acidic foods as studies show that many of the illnesses our bodies possess are due to the extremely high levels of acid in our bodies?, she warned. Nurse Edwards also reminded the group to stay away from white foods like flour and sugar and emphasized the importance of eating raw, alkaline foods.

Mrs Moncur shared a heartfelt story of how her father, a former male nurse, dedicated his life to nurturing others, but failed to take care of his self. He died some years ago at a young age due to complications caused by diabetes. She stressed the seriousness of catering to our health needs as she does not wish for anyone to face the same fate her father did.

CEO and Director of One Eleuthera, Shaun Ingraham addressed the group on the importance of prevention and how the role each one of us play in regard to healthy lifestyle choices and changes affect not only us as individuals, but the entire country. He went on to state that The Bahamas Government spends over $250 million per year on environmental and healthcare expenses for its citizens. The intent is for Eleutherans and Bahamians in general to adapt healthy lifestyles which will result in the decrease of hospitalizations and deaths due to preventable and controllable diseases thereby reducing the strain on the healthcare system. Further, such a consorted effort will decrease the amount of money spent on healthcare, allowing these funds to be funnelled to other areas of need such as education and infrastructure.

Prizes, sponsored by the One Eleuthera Foundation and The Market Place in Rock Sound, were awarded to the top three persons losing the most weight. Mr Brian Babbs was awarded for his assistance with the program and his ability to push everyone hard while maintaining their motivation. Finally, participants were awarded with guava duff made from alkaline products such as spelt flour, sea moss and almond milk.

The second cycle of One Eleuthera?s ?Step Up to Health: 6 Weeks to Wellness/Fitness Boot Camp? will begin November 12th. For more information please visit the One Eleuthera website at www.oneeleuthera.org or contact them via email at info@oneeleuthera.org or by phone at 242-334-4630.

100 Fitness Men of All Time Inspire Health Greatness - Diet Reviews

This week, Men?s Health announced its list of ?100 Fittest Men of All-Time,? including such fitness greats as Bruce Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the man deemed the ?godfather of fitness,? Jack LaLanne.

While it must?ve been a difficult process to select only 100 bodies out of hundreds of thousands of elite athletes who?ve walked the Earth, the final cut boasts some of the most amazingly fit men of all time who will continue to inspire greatness well beyond their peak years of health.?Here we review the top five picks with a brief snapshot of each, starting with the athlete who came it at number five: College Football Hall of Fame member Herschel Walker.

For those not familiar with Walker (we certainly weren?t), he?s a former NFL player who made a triumphant return to sports as an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter 13 years after retiring from football. At age 40, not only was his comeback commendable but impressive, as he performed quite well winning two pro MMA bouts to date.

Perhaps more impressive is Walker?s daily workout regimen which includes up to 3,500 sit-ups, 1,500 push-ups, and an 8 mile run. Can you imagine the amount of calories it would take to sustain such a grueling routine??Men?s Health also pointed out that the athlete is considering making a return to the gridiron at the ripe age of 50, which leads us to ask ?Is there anything Herschel Walker can?t do?? ?

Coming in at number four is nutritionist, author and bodybuilding icon Jack LaLanne, who is often referred to as the ?godfather of fitness? for his enthusiasm for nutrition and the importance of keeping your body in peak shape at all stages of life.

In addition to opening one of the first ?modern gyms? as we know them today at the age of 21, LaLanne also hosted the longest running fitness show ever, ?The Jack LaLanne Show.?

LaLanne also authored several books including ?Live Young Forever,? ?Revitalize Your Life,? and ?Total Juicing,? which highlighted the bodybuilder?s firm belief in the importance of juicing for health. The book included more than 125 unique ways to use fresh fruit and vegetable juices and pulpit to achieve optimum health. Though LaLanne passed away in January 2011, his legacy lives on as one of the greatest fitness figures of all time.

The third fittest man on the top 100 list is no stranger to a bikini. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a movie star-turned politician that has made quite the name for himself as one of the great bodybuilders of all time. As reported by Men?s Health, at his prime Schwarzenegger was capable of a 470-pound squat, 440-pound bench press and 680-pound deadlift. As if that isn?t impressive enough, he also secured Mr. Olympia at the age of 23, making him the youngest man ever to hold the coveted title.

His fitness career blossomed into a Hollywood acting career where he starred in such classic roles as Conan the Barbarian, the Terminator and Hercules. Though Schwarzenegger is now nearing 70 years old, he is still in incredible shape and continues to be an inspiration of health and fitness to many.

The number two man on the top 100 list is another big screen star, Bruce Lee. Though Lee stood at just 5 foot 7 inches and weighed 125 pounds, the pint-sized action star was nothing but muscle and made his name in the fitness world as an actor, martial arts instructor, film director and producer and screen writer. Lee was also the founder of a style of martial arts he called :Jeet Kun Do,? which translated means ?The Way of the Intercepting Fist.?

Widely known as the most influential martial artists of all time, Lee rocketed to pop culture icon status thanks to famous action films like ?Way of the Dragon,? ?Fist of Fury,? and ?Game of Death.?

Of Lee, Schwarzenegger once said, ?Bruce Lee had a very ? and I mean very ? defined physique. He probably had one of the lowest body fat counts of any athlete around? He was one of a kind, an idol.?

Chuck Norris was also in awe of Lee once saying, ?Bruce took off his T-shirt, and I marveled again, as I always did every time I saw his physique. He had muscles on muscles.?

Though Lee died in 1973, the man known as ?Hong Kong?s favorite son? continues to influence martial artists and fitness enthusiasts alike.

It?s no surprise that the man who comes in at number one is also the most decorated Olympian of all time. Michael Phelps, born on June 30, 1985, officially retired from competitive swimming this year after another amazing showing at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London. His performance there left him with a total of 18 Olympic gold medals.?

Phelps started his swimming career at the age of 7 and by the age of 10 he held national records for his age group. He?s?won a total of 71 medals in major international competitions, including 57 gold, 11 silver and three bronze. He?s also been deemed the World Swimmer of the Year six times and the American Swimmer of the Year eight times. Sports Illustrated also dubbed him Sportsman of the Year in 2008, and he?s currently the world record holder for the 100-meter butterfly, the 200-meter butterfly and the 400-meter individual medley.

Phelps has also been made famous by his tall ripped n 6-foot 4-inch physique and ?his 9,000-plus calorie diet that he consumed to sustain his vigorous Olympic training regimen. Though Phelps is now officially retired, he stays active in the fitness community through his involvement with the Michael Phelps Foundation, which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and promoting the importance of a healthy lifestyle especially among kids.

Publicist-Turned-Filmmaker Ava DuVernay Gets Glowing AP Profile ...

A year that began with Ava DuVernay?claiming the first-ever win by a black woman of Sundance?s Best Director prize continues apace this month for the former film publicist. As she?told AP entertainment writer Sandy Cohen, ?I?m living my dream.?

DuVernay?s sophomore effort Middle of Nowhere?has received Twitter seal of approval from Oprah Winfrey. Her previous, first effort was endorsed by Roger Ebert. With that kind of Chicago backing, it?s no surprise that DuVernay is already hard at work on her next project ? a documentary about Venus Williams ? and palns to make a movie a year. From Cohen?s profile piece:

There?s a massive congratulatory bouquet of orchids on the desk in her small office overlooking Van Nuys Boulevard? A magnum of Moet with a big gold bow on top sits on the floor?

Bringing light to untold stories and broadening the scope of black independent film is what moves DuVernay to distribute her own projects and those of other black filmmakers. ?Black audiences are not used to art-house fare because they?ve not had any kind of diet of it. It?s not been provided to them,? she said. ?And independent audiences are not used to black fare.?

The name of DuVernay?s film company is wonderfully self-affirming; it?s called the African American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AaFFRM). More info?here.

Gators don't want Gamecocks celebrating in Swamp

(AP) ? The last time South Carolina played at Florida, the Gamecocks celebrated a division title.

Coach Steve Spurrier got doused and carried to midfield. Players hooted and hollered on the sideline, in the locker room and on the flight home.

The Gators remember it vividly.

"That's a feeling you'll never forget," safety Josh Evans said.

No doubt, third-ranked Florida (6-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) will use that 36-14 loss as motivation when the ninth-ranked Gamecocks (6-1, 4-1) return to The Swamp on Saturday.

"It's definitely revenge," Evans said. "It would mean a lot to this team and definitely the roll we're on this year trying to stay undefeated."

No titles are on the line in this one, but the winner will take command in the Eastern Division. Making it to Atlanta for the SEC championship game is the top goal for both teams, and Saturday's loser will need help getting there.

"We realize it's an extremely important game down there in The Swamp," Spurrier said. "Hopefully our guys will be ready to play their best one of the year."

South Carolina is coming off its worst game of the season.

Marcus Lattimore was held to 35 yards rushing, Connor Shaw threw two interceptions and the Gamecocks allowed 258 yards rushing in a 23-21 loss at LSU. The Tigers outgained South Carolina 406-211, recorded four sacks and converted 11 of 19 times on third down.

"It was just frustrating," South Carolina linebacker DeVonte Holloman said. "Some plays, we were at the point of attack and did not make those plays that we've been making all year. I felt like we kind of took a punch and we didn't give one back sometimes. Being more physical, that's what we're working on."

Being healthier might help, too.

Lattimore, who ran 40 times for a career-high 212 yards and three touchdowns two years ago in Gainesville, has a bruised hip that kept him out of practice this week and will keep him out of the starting lineup Saturday. Standout defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has a foot problem that has limited him in practice. Defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles won't play because of a shoulder injury, and defensive linemen Byron Jerideau and J.T. Surratt have been slowed by sprained ankles.

And a flu bug has worked its way through the team, affecting receivers Ace Sanders and Bruce Ellington.

Florida, meanwhile, is getting several players back in time for the stretch run.

Defensive end Dominique Easley (knee) and linebacker Jelani Jenkins (hamstring) are expected to return to the starting lineup Saturday. So are left tackle Xavier Nixon (upper body), guard James Wilson (eye) and center Jon Harrison (elbow).

Florida's offensive line has been key to the team's ground attack.

Senior Mike Gillislee is averaging a little more than 102 yards rushing a game. Two weeks ago against LSU, he ran 34 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Jeff Driskel is averaging 54 yards a game on the ground and has scored four times. Last week at Vanderbilt, Driskel set a school record for rushing by a quarterback with 177 yards. He had touchdown runs of 13, 37 and 70 yards.

"If we can get the run stopped and make them one-dimensional, we'll do very good," South Carolina linebacker Shaq Wilson said.

The Gators have the same game plan, even if it's backup Kenny Miles carrying the ball instead of Lattimore.

Without Lattimore last season, the Gamecocks ran for 215 yards in a 17-12 win against Florida.

Brandon Wilds had 120 yards rushing, and Shaw added 88 yards and two scores on the ground.

"Shaw is just a winner, a guy that creates plays with his legs, does a lot of good things for their football team," Florida coach Will Muschamp said. "The play is never dead with him. He can create so much with his legs and he's a tough, hard-nosed, competitive guy, a guy you enjoy competing against because of the way he plays the game."

South Carolina and Georgia were popular, preseason picks to win the East. Florida has been much more of a surprise in Muschamp's second season.

The Gators have shown toughness, resiliency and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win games. They already avenged a 30-point loss to LSU and would like nothing more than to check the Gamecocks off the list next ? even if few players are willing to openly admit it.

"Really, to tell you the truth, it's just another game for us," Florida linebacker Jon Bostic said. "It's another SEC opponent. We've got to play well to win this game. We can't really look over them or look at this game any different than any other game."
