Drugs in the Italian air are nothing to snort at

WHEN in Rome, you get a little hit of cocaine with every breath.

A study of psychotropic drug levels in ambient air from eight Italian cities found background levels of cocaine, cannabinoids - the active ingredients in marijuana - nicotine and caffeine in every urban centre.

Turin had the highest concentrations of cocaine, says Angelo Cecinato at the Institute of Atmospheric Pollution Research in Rome. Meanwhile, Bologna and Florence had some of the highest cannabinoid levels, which Cecinato attributes to the large student populations in the two cities. The drug concentrations are much too low to have an effect, though (Environmental Pollution, doi.org/jhk).

Lawsuit: Aspen Dental clinics operating illegally

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Aspen Dental Management and the private equity firm that controls it illegally operate dental clinics across the country and engage in aggressive, misleading profit-driven practices that cause patients economic harm, claims a federal lawsuit filed Thursday in New York.

East Syracuse-based Aspen and Leonard Green and Partners are violating laws that require clinics to be owned by dentists actively performing procedures onsite to prevent business interests from trumping those of patients, according to court papers filed at U.S. District Court in Albany.

The suit is on behalf of 11 people in 11 states, but their lawyers are seeking class action status that could cover tens of thousands of current and former patients and untold monetary damages.

They argue that the structure of Aspen Dental puts a premium on getting patients to consent to expensive treatment plans through aggressive sales pitches after they've been attracted to the clinics by free exam and X-ray promotions.

Lawyers Brian Cohen and Jeffrey Norton said the goal is to maximize profits for the non-dentist owners of Aspen by using dentists as "sham" owners of clinics, some of which operate too far away, including in other states, for the dentists to practice there. That, they say, violates New York's law against "unlawful corporate practice of medicine."

Aspen's "so-called 'Practice Owners' are nothing more than de facto employees and/or independent contractors" of the company, which controls its 358 clinics' marketing, credit offers, hiring, training and bookkeeping, according to the court papers.

Kasey Pickett, Aspen's director of communication, said the accusations made in the filing were "entirely without merit." She said Aspen doesn't employ dentists or control clinical care, instead providing management support.

A message left with Leonard Green and Partners, a $15 billion private equity firm based in Los Angeles, wasn't initially returned. The court papers say the firm took a controlling interest in Aspen for $547 million in 2010.

There are Aspen clinics in 22 states: Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.

Sarah Polley's Stories We Tell liberates director from her past

?

Actor and director Sarah Polley said a call from a reporter started her on the road to making her documentary Stories We Tell, about her reunion with her biological father, Harry Gulkin.

Photograph by: Joel Ryan , AP

MONTREAL ? ?It doesn?t get more personal than this,? Sarah Polley said, on the phone from her Toronto home last week to talk about her new film, Stories We Tell.

After two fiction features ? Away From Her (2007) and Take This Waltz (2011) ? the writer-director-actor turns to documentary, interviewing her father, siblings and friends to uncover a family secret.

It was a long time coming. Polley has been working on the film ? and fearing the leak of the story ? for several years. It all began in 2005, when she received a phone call from a reporter who had heard of her recent reunion with her biological father, and wanted to write a feel-good piece from Polley?s perspective.

She broke into tears, as she recounts in the film, and begged the reporter not to publish the piece. Polley had been searching for her biological father in secret for some time, since hearing rumours her mother (who died of cancer when she was 11) had an affair around the time of her birth.

And while she had found her biological father, Montreal film producer Harry Gulkin, Polley had not yet informed the man she had always known as her father, Michael Polley. She was fearful that the whole thing would turn into a Canadian tabloid mess. It was then that she decided she had to tell the story herself.

?I really didn?t like the idea of a journalist deciding the context of telling the story,? she said. ?There are so many versions, and so many people with completely different versions of the story. I would have felt very badly if any of the versions had been left out.

?The first (reporter) was going to print a simplistic, happy reunion story. But there were so many repercussions beyond that. Painted in that way, it would have been hurtful to many members of my family.?

One of the amazing things about Stories We Tell is how it turns something potentially scandalous into a fascinating rumination on relationships, the malleability of truth and our need for narrative. This last point, from which the film?s title springs, inspired Polley?s open-ended approach to the film.

?We were all doing so much storytelling to begin with,? she said. ?My siblings were telling their friends, and people they hardly knew. My dad began writing voraciously. My biological father was recording his version. It was fascinating.?

To accommodate everyone, she decided to let them all speak for themselves.

She interviews her father ? and has him narrate from his written account of events ? as well as her four older siblings, Gulkin and anyone else who has something to say.

She begins by asking each to ?tell the story, from the beginning.? There are uncomfortable laughs and tentative first attempts. What emerges along the way is a multi-textured patchwork of shared history having to do with ?the way we make sense of our lives,? Polley observed. ?We need an arc to grasp onto. Otherwise life is a series of messy, bewildering, overwhelming events. There?s an essential human need to tell stories and create narrative.?

Missing from the film is Polley?s own voice. She is there, at the centre of the story as the physical result of the events in question, but she neither tells her version nor comments on things directly.

?I would say my version of the story ? I was in the editing room,? she said. ?But because I was aware of that, I almost left my version out. My thoughts and experiences, the way I remember things, are not in the film. I left that to other people, even if they don?t have the same memories.

?I don?t know how reliable my version is, anyway. It doesn?t matter how committed people are to the past, there are always discrepancies.?

That Polley calls this her most personal work, despite the fact that she doesn?t spill her guts on camera, speaks to the intimate process of making the film, and of seeing it ? her life, her family, her secret ? on screen.

?I don?t know how to make anything more personal (than this),? she said. ?For the first time, it really matters what people think. I?m not immune to criticism, but whether it was praise or criticism in the past, I had a really healthy attitude toward it. ? For this one, it?s impossible not to feel vulnerable. It feels like the first time I made a film.?

As exposed as it makes her feel, Stories We Tell has liberated Polley from her past. Her narrative is now something she has control of rather than a secret she fought tooth and nail to keep under wraps.

?I think I did live with a certain tension for the past four or five years,? she said. ?When the story was finally out, my editor Mike Munn sent me an email saying, ?It?s nice to imagine you walking around with less weight on your shoulders.?

?For four or five years, I kept waiting for someone else to tell my story in a way that was hurtful to me or my family ? for a journalist to just print it. And I spent a long time explaining why that was not a way that I felt was appropriate to tell the story. A huge weight came off when the film finally screened.?

Trine Hahnemann?s Scandinavian Christmas

Christmas came early for me this year, with Trine Hahnemann?s Scandinavian Christmas to celebrate the launch of her book of the same name at Food at 52 in London.

Trine Hahnemann's Scandinavian Christmas

Trine Hahnemann?s Scandinavian Christmas

The food was wonderful. Lightly cured cod with slow baked celeriac started us off. The main course was a terrific roast pork (with lots of crackling), caramel potatoes (new to me but I am hooked) and lots of gravy. Red cabbage and a lovely kale and pomegranate salad were served on the side.

Dessert was rice pudding but not as we know it, lovely crunchy rice bathed in lots of whipped cream with cherries served on top. Fabulous.

All of the recipes are in Trine?s new book, Scandinavian Christmas. It is absolutely gorgeous, and I think we will be cooking from it for our Christmas dinner this year. If you are new to Trine?s work, I heartily recommend her two previous books The Scandinavian Cookbook and The Nordic Diet. Trine is an inspired and creative cook, and her books are full of deliciousness.

'True Blood' actor Chris Bauer to return to stage

NEW YORK (AP) ? "True Blood" star Chris Bauer is going to be sinking his teeth in a new play in New York.

The Atlantic Theater Company said Thursday that Bauer will star in a production of "What Rhymes With America" a new work by by Melissa James Gibson.

Bauer, who also was on NBC's "Third Watch" and the Billy Crystal movie "61(asterisk)," said in a phone interview from Los Angeles that he was desperate to hit the stage again.

"I've told my children to think of this as though I'm going for a life-saving operation," he said. "The opportunity to work on a play from the ground up in my favorite theater with all new people, makes me feel like there's a real potential for reinvigoration."

The cast also includes Aimee Carrero, who currently stars on the Cartoon Network live-action series "Level Up"; Seana Kofoed, on Broadway in "Proof" and "Night Must Fall"; and Da'Vine Joy Randolph, who earned a Tony Award nomination for "Ghost: The Musical."

It will be directed by Daniel Aukin, who recently staged Joshua Harmon's play "Bad Jews" and Sam Shepard's "Heartless" off-Broadway and "4000 Miles" by Amy Herzog at Lincoln Center. Previews of "What Rhymes With America" begin Nov. 19. The play opens Dec. 12.

Bauer, a company member of the Atlantic Theater Company, has appeared in three Jezz Butterworth's plays at the Atlantic ? "The Night Heron," ''Parlour Song" and "Mojo."

Bauer, 45, plays Detective Andy Bellefleur in "True Blood" and is known for his role as union boss Frank Sobotka on the TV series "The Wire." He made his Broadway debut in "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 2005.

Bauer said the new play is about a father's attempt to connect with his estranged daughter. All the characters, he said, "are desperately trying to connect and have an impact on their world, and no one's noticing." Gibson, a staff writer on the FX show "The Americans," also wrote the play "This."

Bauer was last on stage in 2010 doing David Mamet's "Romance" at the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor. Though it had a short run, "it was long enough for me to see how totally out of shape I was," he said laughing.

"There's a level of fitness that's required to give an audience what they deserve. You just do not get the strength in those muscles on television."

Sleeping on the job is good for productivity | Business Cornwall

1:28 pm, October 19, 2012

Businesses in Cornwall should let their staff grab an afternoon kip, a new report is advising.

According to leadership and business experts Professors Nada and Andrew Kakabadse, encouraging workers to take an afternoon nap could dramatically improve economic fortunes.

Kakabadse said: ?Having assessed employee performance and health studies recently conducted across the UK, US and Western Europe, we believe offering workers the opportunity for a brief nap provides significant benefits in employee concentration, health and productivity.

?People are increasingly being asked to do more with less at work. Outdated and uninspiring management practice is having an oppressing effect on workforces, who are increasingly operating in environments where the attitude is ?lunch is for wimps?.?

The study claims that people napping at least three times a week for an average of 30 minutes have a 37% lower coronary mortality than those not taking siestas. And a group taking a 90-minute sleep improved in their ability to learn by 10%, while a non-napping group did 10% worse.

Kakabadse added: ?A key consequence of the economic crisis is that breaks are getting shorter as job insecurity increases.

?We recommend companies consider and evaluate appropriate break times for their workers. Staff should be encouraged to take approved rests, and be provided with a private place where they can take a nap without any pressure of their reputation being damaged for doing so.?

PFT: Patriots' no-huddle 'is borderline illegal'?

Ndamukong SuhAP

For all the attention Ndamukong Suh has earned for himself, he?s now being forced to explain for his sister.

Last Saturday, the day after Suh and his sister were sued and two days after he was involved in a fourth traffic accident in under three years as a Lion, Suh?s sister Ngum tweeted: ?Thank u Jesus! Only 2.5 more years! #Freedom?.

Perhaps coincidentally, Suh has two and a half years left on his rookie contract, thanks to a voidable final year.

That led the Lions defensive tackle to go on the offensive with his love for Detroit.

?What my sister tweets is what she tweets,? he said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. ?It has nothing to do with me. That?s her personal account. That?s why her name?s on it. I have my personal account that says verified, it says my name on it.?

So when asked about his future with the Lions, he said: ?I would love to be here. This city is great to me, it continues to be great to me. The people are great people and I love playing here, that?s why I wear the jersey.?

For all his talent on the field, his traffic problems have drawn as much notice since his rookie season, something he said he?s used to.

?There?s been a microscope on me since what was it, I graduated high school in ?05, so being an Army All-American in high school, being an All-American in college, being a first-[round], second overall pick in the NFL, there?s always going to be a microscope on you,? Suh said. ?That comes with the territory.?

Asked how he keeps the off-field issues from being a distraction, he replied: ?Next question. It?s as simple as that. Next question.?

All this story really needs now, is for Wes Welker to swing by and tell everyone Ngum was just joking, and it?ll be tied up in a neat little bow.
