Giants first base coach Kelly injured during BP

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? San Francisco Giants first base coach Roberto Kelly sustained a concussion Saturday after getting hit in the back of the head when Buster Posey's ball struck him while he was standing near second base during batting practice.

But Kelly was still expected to be on the field for Game 1 of the NL championship series on Sunday as long as he gets cleared by team doctors.

He was taken to a hospital for tests and later released, with athletic trainer Dave Groeschner saying in a text, "doing better, going home."

"We let the doctors see him tomorrow," Groeschner said.

Kelly walked off the field with assistance and was placed on a stretcher to leave the ballpark. The NL West champion Giants were holding a workout at AT&T Park a day before opening the series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Posey said he didn't see what happened.

"I saw him on the ground like everybody else, I didn't see it hit him," Posey said. "Anytime somebody gets hit in the head you're worried for them. He seemed to be doing all right. He was cognizant and answering questions. I think any time with a head injury, it is scary because you just can't take anything for granted with that, and you have to be really, really careful."

The frightening moment came just more than a month after Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy took a line drive to the right side of his head on a ball from the Angels' Erick Aybar on Sept. 5. McCarthy, Oakland's opening day starter, sustained an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture on the play and underwent two hours of surgery.

The 48-year-old Kelly has been the Giants' first base coach since 2008. He played 14 seasons in the majors for eight teams and was a career .290 hitter with 124 home runs and 585 RBIs. The outfielder spent his longest stint with the New York Yankees, from 1987-92 and again to finish his career in 2000.

He also played for the Reds, Braves, Expos, Dodgers, Twins, Mariners and Rangers.

Kelly was a two-time All-Star and played in 1,337 career games.

Scientists identify mammal model of bladder regeneration

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? While it is well known that starfish, zebrafish and salamanders can re-grow damaged limbs, scientists understand very little about the regenerative capabilities of mammals. Now, researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center's Institute for Regenerative Medicine report on the regenerative process that enables rats to re-grow their bladders within eight weeks.

In PLOS ONE, a peer-reviewed, online publication, the scientists characterize this unique model of bladder regeneration with the goal of applying what they learn to human patients.

"A better understanding of the regenerative process at the molecular and cellular level is a key to more rapid progress in applying regenerative medicine to help patients," said George Christ, Ph.D., senior researcher and professor of regenerative medicine at Wake Forest Baptist.

In a previous study by Christ's team, research in rats showed that when about 75 percent of the animals' bladders were removed, they were able to regenerate a complete functional bladder within eight weeks. The current study focused on how the regeneration occurs.

"There is very little data on the mechanisms involved in organ regeneration in mammals," said Christ. "To our knowledge, bladder regeneration holds a unique position -- there is no other mammalian organ capable of this type of regeneration."

The ability of the liver to grow in size when lobes are removed is sometimes referred to as regeneration, but this is a misnomer, said co-author Bryon Petersen, Ph.D., who was a professor of regenerative medicine at Wake Forest Baptist during the period the research occurred. Instead, through a proliferation of cells, the remaining tissue grows to compensate for the lost size. In contrast, the hallmark of true regeneration is following nature's "pattern" to exactly duplicate size, form and function, Petersen said.

"If we can understand the bladder's regenerative process, the hope is that we can prompt the regeneration of other organs and tissues where structure is important -- from the intestine and spinal cord to the heart," said Petersen.

The current study showed that the animals' bodies responded to injury by increasing the rate at which certain cells divided and grew. The most notable proliferative response occurred initially in the urothelium, the layer of tissue that lines the bladder.

As the proliferative activity in the bladder lining waned, it continued elsewhere: in the fibrous band (lamina propria) that separates the bladder lining from the bladder muscles and in the bladder muscle itself.

The researchers have several theories about how the process works, said Christ. One possibility is that cells in the bladder lining transition and become a type of stem cell that can proliferate throughout the bladder. Other theories are that cells in the bladder lining signal other cells to replicate and that injury prompts stem cells to arrive through the blood stream to repair the bladder damage.

In future studies, the scientists will work to identify the exact regenerative process and will expand the work into mice. The ability to breed mice that lack specific genes will enable the team to explore how genes and proteins may affect the regenerative process and possibly help identify therapies to prompt regeneration.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases under award number R21DK081832.

Co-researchers were Charles C. Peyton, M.D., lead author, David Burmeister, Ph.D., and Karl-Erik Andersson, M.D., Ph.D., of Wake Forest Baptist. Peterson is now at the University of Florida and an adjunct professor at Wake Forest Baptist.

Clinton lends star power to Democratic candidates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Twelve years after leaving the White House, Bill Clinton is campaigning as if he's in the political race of his life.

In some ways, he is. Clinton is endorsing President Barack Obama and Democrats in tight races for the House and Senate. But he's also burnishing a legacy as the party's elder statesman, rock star, global humanitarian and husband of Hillary Rodham Clinton, a once-and-perhaps-future presidential candidate herself.

In Indianapolis on Friday to boost Senate Democratic hopeful Joe Donnelly, Clinton said he hadn't expected to be so involved in the 2012 campaign. But Hillary Clinton is busy as secretary of state, and daughter Chelsea works for a broadcast network, he noted.

"So you're stuck with me," Clinton told the crowd.

Obama and other Democrats ? maybe even Clinton himself ? wouldn't have it any other way.

Bitter at the way Al Gore campaigned largely without him in 2000, Clinton has become Obama's surrogate in chief in a nationwide campaign tour, lending his oratorical skill and folksy style to increasingly personal contests in races that, four weeks out, show few signs of budging. Clinton is especially helpful in conservative states where Democratic candidates aren't eager to appear with the unpopular Obama. Clinton is a leading expert in the art of the political comeback ? a skill the struggling Obama could use now.

Also, there's this uncomfortable truth: Obama needs Clinton to generate support with white, working-class and independent voters who were drawn to Clinton and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney ? but who haven't warmed to Obama.

"If there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," Romney joked in his own speech at the Clinton Global Initiative last month, a nod to Clinton's convention speech.

Obama himself has cracked that he should appoint Clinton "secretary of explaining stuff."

The lighthearted tone and determined cooperation between Obama and Clinton is hard-won and may not end with the 2012 campaign.

The bruising 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton damaged relations between the families. Obama's appointment of Hillary Clinton to serve as his secretary of state ? and her successes in the job ? healed the relationship enough for Clinton to step in to help with Obama's re-election. And if Obama has Bill Clinton to thank for a second term, one way to pay back the debt could be Obama's support for a Hillary Clinton campaign of the future.

Among voters generally, Bill Clinton is more appealing than Obama. A CBS News/New York Times poll in September found 66 percent of registered voters with a favorable view of Clinton, compared with 45 percent for Obama.

"He's got a way of communicating complex ideas in plain ways that no one else has," said Greg Haas, who ran Clinton's 1992 campaign in Ohio and who is Democratic chairman in Franklin County, which includes Columbus. "No one in my lifetime. He's in a class by himself."

Clinton symbolizes good economic times for many voters, including a federal budget that was balanced under his leadership. His convention speech rebutted Romney's attacks on Obama and accused Romney of pushing an economic plan that is doomed to fail. Clinton lends Obama credibility on the issue that voters consistently name as their top concern: the economy.

Clinton rocketed out of the party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., last month energized by the massive crowd's roaring reaction to his partly ad-libbed call to arms. His star newly shined, Clinton plunged into a two-day swing in the key state of Florida and has since added stops for Obama in a string of political battlegrounds.

During one recent week, Clinton joined Obama at a meeting with about a dozen supporters at a private residence in Los Angeles; he hosted a fundraiser with about 160 people who bought tickets starting at $1,000; he spoke at a rally for four northern California Democrats in tight House races; he was in Nevada for a rally for Obama and Democratic Senate candidate Shelley Berkley; and he was at Arizona State University rally with Democratic Senate candidate Richard Carmona. Then came stops in Iowa and Indiana for more rallies with Senate and congressional candidates as well as fundraising events.

He's expected to keep up the pace until Election Day.

All told, Clinton has appeared at no fewer than 32 fundraisers and 15 rallies for Obama. One big-ticket reception at a private New York City residence with Clinton last June drew 47 people who paid $40,000 apiece. On Friday, he joined Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., for a Detroit-area fundraiser that her campaign said brought in about $350,000 for Michigan Democrats.

During a recent Las Vegas rally for Obama and other Democratic candidates, Clinton showcased his ability to poke fun at foes without demonizing them. He mocked Romney's move to the political center in the opening presidential debate.

"I had a different reaction to that first debate than a lot of people did," Clinton told the crowd. "I thought, 'Wow, here's old moderate Mitt. Where ya been, boy?'"

Clinton is also building favor with local Democrats, many of whom are longtime allies.

"He generates a huge amount of media attention when he's visiting these states," said Fergus Cullen, a former New Hampshire GOP state party chairman.

Cullen said Clinton's visit earlier this year to New Hampshire to endorse Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Maggie Hassan, a Clinton ally in 2008, provided a stamp of party establishment approval that helped Hassan win her competitive primary.

Yet Clinton's prominent campaign role could pose some potential downsides for Democrats. Some Democrats fret Clinton could overshadow Obama. A Pew Research Center poll last month showed 29 percent of those surveyed said Clinton's convention speech was the highlight of the party gathering, while just 16 percent called Obama's speech the highlight.

But there's no hiding the Clinton magic during an election year.

In Indianapolis on Friday, the former president noted that he had stayed the night before in Washington with Hillary, celebrating their 37th wedding anniversary. He recalled that she told him she wished she could come with him to campaign this year.

One of the event organizers had apologized to the former president for the size of the crowd, saying "that's as good as we can do for a crowd here except for a basketball game."

Clinton, famously fond of a crowd of any size, grinned.

"I'll take that," he said.

Running Low On Money? Use This Home Based Business Advice ...

There are many people out there that are ditching their 9-5 jobs, and making money with a home based business. Although this is true, many don?t know where to begin. To reach your goal, you should arm yourself with as much knowledge and information as possible. This article discusses the things you need to know to get started.

In order to get your business making a profit as quickly as possible, you should practice marketing your expertise online. There are a variety of Internet marketing tools, including blogs, emails, forums and articles. Actively using these tools can put more money on the books through giving your business more exposure.

When you are the only owner of a home business, you will be the one making the financial decisions as well. It?s a bad idea to allow someone else to have access to your business accounts. Personal and business finances need to remain separate. Failing to do so can affect your ability to use purchases as a tax write off.

Organize your office so that your business contracts and other business files are easily reachable. Keep your phone and internet contracts in the same location in case you need to argue with these companies over their service.

Look for sites that let you buy your business supplies at wholesale prices. Many wholesale companies are available online and can offer you discounts on the supplies your business needs at a fraction of the cost of retail. A business license is necessary to purchase supplies wholesale.

Schedule your work hours, and stick to your plan to ensure that you also get adequate personal time. Pick a time of day when after which you?ll no longer accept a business call. Be sure to schedule enough time for your loved ones and friends and for your own interests.

While jogging your brain for ideas about your online business products, be sure to to find something that meets certain needs you have. People buy items that fulfill their everyday needs. If you are able to come up with a solution for an issue that you have, it will probably be popular with others.

Having the support of family and friends will also increase the chances of succeeding in your home business. A home business will take up a lot of your time, and it can be hard and stressful work. Make sure that your family is on board and that they are willing to lend their support with your home business, otherwise it will be nearly impossible to become successful.

It is important to set aside some of the money you make so that you have it on hand to pay your annual tax bills. You will have to pay between 15 and 20 percent of your income back in taxes so it is easier to put it away during the year, instead of scrambling for it around tax time.

A successful business venture will have a quality business plan. Even if you don?t have outside investors, you should have a business plan. With a business plan, you are forced to clearly articulate your short and long-term goals, and you must identify each necessary step in order to reach them.

A flash drive is a great way to back up valuable business information. Losing your documents can have an effect on sales, tax filings and other areas that would negatively affect your business. There are also backup solutions found online like Mozy.

When you are in the hiring process, do your research. Your employees should be dependable and they should know what they are talking about.

You may want to avoid taking out a loan to help you get started with your work from home business. Is the chance worth taking if it means jeopardizing your relationship? Do you want to gamble your house on the success of your business in order to get a bank loan?

When working from home, try to always achieve your personal best. Your online business can give you a huge motivation boost, but if you neglect yourself in favor of your work, that can take its toll over time. You should take your showers in the morning, limit the amount of snacks you consume, and always make the time to get exercise. The tips below can help you feel more confident and others will see that!

Set up a fund that you can use in case of emergency, in order to ensure your business? financial security. You will be able to afford expenses that are surprises and your business will run properly. Only take money from this fund when it is absolutely necessary and make sure that you replace the money at the first available opportunity.

Keep your mind focused on what is yet to come. Try to remember that your past successes are in the past. Keep your eyes on the goals you have set for today and the coming weeks. This will leave you prepared for both opportunities, as well as obstacles you may run into. You are sure to never be surprised.

Now that you have a greater idea of what you need to do to create and manage a home based business, you should start feeling like you can accomplish your home business enterprise goals. Remember that the information you learned is only going to work if you apply it. If you follow the tips in this article, then your home business should succeed

Obama trumpets rebound of US auto industry - Washington Examiner

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is hailing the rebound of the U.S. auto industry, pointing to progress since his administration rescued General Motors and Chrysler.

Obama says in his weekly radio and Internet address that auto sales are the highest they've been in more than four years and the industry has created nearly a quarter of a million new jobs.

Obama frequently cites GM and Chrysler as a success story for his campaign. Automakers are large employers in Ohio, one of the key battleground states being contested by Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican running for Congress, says in the GOP address that the Obama administration has pushed regulations that make it difficult for businesses.

He says the economy "doesn't need more meddling ? it needs more certainty."

Iran denies steep plunge in oil exports

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's oil exports have remained steady in recent months, Iran's OPEC governor said on Saturday, denying a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) that Iran is struggling to arrest a decline in its oil sales.

In a report on Friday, the IEA estimated Iran's exports falling to a new low of 860,000 barrels per day (bpd) in September, a huge plunge from 2.2 million bpd at the end of 2011.

The drop in Iranian supply is supporting oil prices and hurting Tehran's revenues, deepening hardship for a population deprived of basic imports and adding to pressure on the government over its nuclear program.

But Mohammad Ali Khatibi, Iran's OPEC governor, said the IEA's data was faulty and ran counter to data provided to OPEC by Iran.

"Iran's oil exports are the same as previous months and the situation is stable," Khatibi was quoted as saying by the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) on Saturday.

Khatibi also denied that the only buyers of Iranian oil were China, India, South Korea, Japan, and Turkey.

"The market for Iranian oil is beyond the mentioned countries...We are always exploring new markets but we don't publicize them much because it may be detrimental," Khatibi said without elaborating.

The United States and its allies are pressing Tehran to give up its disputed nuclear program by choking off oil revenues, which provide the vast majority of Iran's hard currency earnings. Iran says the program is for peaceful purposes.

The European Union banned Iranian crude from July 1 and other countries have cut purchases in response to tighter U.S. sanctions. The EU ban prevents EU insurance firms from covering Iran's exports, hindering imports by some non-EU buyers.

On Friday, the European Union provisionally approved new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, with senior diplomats giving their backing to measures against Tehran's banking sector and industry.
