Researcher helps make Sudoku puzzles less puzzling

Friday, October 12, 2012

For anyone who has ever struggled while attempting to solve a Sudoku puzzle, University of Notre Dame researcher Zoltan Toroczkai and Notre Dame postdoctoral researcher Maria Ercsey-Ravaz are riding to the rescue. They can not only explain why some Sudoku puzzles are harder than others, they have also developed a mathematical algorithm that solves Sudoku puzzles very quickly, without any guessing or backtracking.

Toroczkai and Ravaz of Romania's Babes-Boylai University began studying Sudoku as part of their research into the theory of optimization and computational complexity. They note that most Sudoku enthusiasts use what is known as a "brute force" system to solve problems, combined with a good deal of guessing. Brute force systems essentially deploy all possible combinations of numbers in a Sudoku puzzle until the correct answer is found. While the method is successful, it is also time consuming.

Instead, Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravaz have proposed a universal analog algorithm which is completely deterministic (no guessing or exhaustive searching) but which always arrives at the correct solution to a problem and does so much quicker.

The researchers also discovered that the time it took to solve a problem with their analog algorithm correlated with the difficulty of the problem as rated by human solvers. This led them to develop a ranking scale for problem or puzzle difficulty. The scale runs from 1 through 4 and it matches up nicely with the "Easy" through

"Hard" to "Ultra-Hard" classification currently applied to Sudoku puzzles. A puzzle with a rating of 2 takes, on average, 10 times as long to solve than one with rating of 1. According to this system, the hardest known puzzle so far has a rating of 3.6 and it is not known if there are even harder puzzles out there.

"I had not been interested in Sudoku until we started working on the much more general class of 'Boolean satisfiability problems," Toroczkai said. "Since Sudoku is a part of this class, it seemed like a good testbed for our solver, so I familiarized myself with it. To me, and to a number of researchers studying such problems, a fascinating question is how far can us humans go in solving Sudoku puzzles deterministically, without backtracking, that is without making a choice at random, then seeing where that leads to and if it fails, restarting. Our analog solver is deterministic ? there are no random choices or backtracks made during the dynamics." Toroczkai and Ercsey-Ravasz feel that their analog algorithm can potentially be applied to a wide variety of problems in industry, computer science and computational biology.

The research experience has also made Toroczkai a devotee of Sudoku puzzles.

"Both my wife and I have several Sudoku apps on our iPhones and we must have played thousands of times, racing to get the shortest completion times on all levels," he said. "She often sees combinations of patterns that I completely miss. I have to deduce them. Without paper and pencil to jot down possibilities, it becomes impossible for me to solve many of the puzzles that our solver categorizes as hard or ultra-hard." Toroczkai's and Ercsey-Ravasv's methodology was first published in the journal Nature Physics and its application to Sudoku, appears in the Oct. 11 edition of the journal Nature Scientific Reports.

Pay Per Click Advertising Still Useful within a Diversified Online ...

gI 74198 PPCEcademy Formatted Logo Pay Per Click Advertising Still Useful within a Diversified Online Marketing Approach
(PRWEB UK) 12 October 2012

A recent survey showed that marketers are losing faith in Pay Per Click Advertising (PPC) as a profitable advertising method. However, one of Australia?s leading internet marketers still believes that PPC has a useful role in a business? advertising toolbox. The key is to know how to run effective PPC campaigns and to use PPC as part of a diversified approach.

Pay Per Click Advertising is the practice of buying advertising space on the first page of search engine results. In PPC, businesses bid on keywords that are relevant to their business. The higher their bid is, the more likely that their ad will appear at a better spot on the search engine results page. PPC advertisers only pay when people click on their ads.

A huge plus with PPC is that businesses can see results very quickly. Creating a Google AdWords campaign is not difficult, and businesses can measure their results in real-time once the PPC ads run. It is possible to see results within a few days of running a campaign.

However, many beginners neglect their PPC campaigns because they believe the misconception that a PPC campaign does not need maintenance once it begins. They do not realize that a successful PPC campaign requires constant tweaking and awareness of changes they may need to make to their campaign.

PPC campaigns are transparent since Google AdWords clearly shows the campaigns? results. Businesses can also manage their PPC costs by setting a budget for Google not to exceed. Because PPC requires an investment of money, beginners at PPC are turning to courses to get them up-to-speed on what they need to run a successful PPC campaign.

PayPerClickEcademy is one of the companies offering PPC training to help novices become fluent PPC advertisers. Owned by Binh An Nguyen, one of Australia?s leading internet marketers, PayPerClickEcademy trains its students in the full spectrum of PPC campaign creation and management. It covers things such as how to create effective PPC ads, and how to lower PPC costs.

A recent industry survey of over 500 U.S. marketers by Webmarketing 123 showed that marketers believed they were getting better results from Search Engine Optimisation than from PPC. Does this mean that businesses should abandon PPC? Mr. Nguyen does not think so. Although he also owns a Search Engine Optimisation firm, Mr. Nguyen takes a moderate approach when evaluating whether or not a business should use PPC.

?We don?t think you should stop pay per click, especially if it?s working for you. We think there?s great value in sponsored advertising, social media, and in search engine optimisation. We fully believe in a diversified approach,? says Mr. Nguyen.

EA Founder Trip Hawkins Predicts Consoles Will Become "A Hobby ...

trip hawkins EA Founder Trip Hawkins Predicts Consoles Will Become A Hobby Market

Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins has predicted that video game consoles will become a?hobbyist?market, with the vast majority of players moving towards PC and mobile for gaming.

Speaking to IGN, Hawkins said in part:

?The console market is always going to be with us, because there?s always going to be a hardcore segment, a segment that likes innovation, but it?s going to become a smaller market, and it?s going to be more like a hobby market.?

?You look at airplanes. Most of us just want to be a passenger, but there?s a hobby market for people who are really into aviation and want to take flying lessons and maybe someday have their own airplane. I think that?s what?s happening to the console market.?

?But there are billions of people now playing games. The gaming industry is finally becoming mass-market. It?s across two billion PCs and four billion mobile phones, and within a few years a billion tablets. In terms of total audience size, we?re getting into really big numbers.?

??In the old days I?d go down to the basement to play Grand Theft Auto. But the Facebook gamer is able to play at work, at home, in a hotel on a PC. They can get access to a browser just about anywhere. People are thinking about convenience first.?

It is an undeniable fact that the video game console market is facing increased challenges from PC and mobile devices, however, I?m not so sure that the time is right to just write it off as a niche market.

The console market has faced hard times in the past, specifically when it crashed in 1983 only to be brought back to life by Nintendo and the NES. If, as Trip Hawkins suggests, the consoles are headed for another huge downturn I suspect that we will see them rise again when the right company introduces some innovative product that grabs the consumer?s attention.

It?s also a little more than ironic that Hawkins is naming the PC?as one of the home console?s biggest threats, when we have been hearing for years that video game consoles killed PC gaming.

My guess is that the upcoming transition to the next generation of consoles will be a very difficult one, and there might be some players who exit for other markets. However, as long as home consoles innovate and have gaming as their core focus I suspect that there will always be a significant number of consumers who will support the platform.

Heston's new ready meals: hit or miss? | Life and style | guardian.co.uk

Heston from Waitrose ready meals

Heston from Waitrose ready meals.

Ah Heston, Heston, Heston. ?bermensch of the gastronomic zeitgeist that you are, it's hard to write anything food-related without mentioning your name. And now here I am with your new range of ready meals before me, wondering what sort of pine-infused trickery you've come up with this time.

Yet not withstanding the sprinkle of black truffle here, the umber hillock of chilli butter there, these meals seem peculiarly safe and, well, dull. Have you lost your spark, or is this your one-nation moment?

Because if it's the latter, that nation appears to be stuck in 1970. For a man that gave us tea that is simultaneously hot and cold, mustard ice cream, and a burger that takes longer to make than a return trip to Australia, your fish pie, shepherd's pie, mac and cheese and lasagne are all something of a backward step.

But I underestimate you, of course I do. For it's never just lasagne where you're concerned. Even now, as I survey the sleek black packaging I know that inside is so much more than a lasagne. You promise it's "even better than mama used to make." Well it's not, but it's fine. It is indeed rich and the pasta is well-textured, and despite the abiding sense of glueyness I return for another forkful. Chilli con carne is deliciously smoky and has a good level of spice and richness ? nudged along by the flavoured butter, though the mince is a little granular.

Onto the shepherd's pie, a dish that I've long believed stands or falls on the quality of its mash, and I'm sure you agree. You've spent many hours getting your mash right, analysing water content and starch levels of various potato varieties in order to achieve the smoothest results. This mash is smooth all right ? it would do a plasterer well. It also remains oddly straight-faced during its half hour in the oven, unwilling to adopt the golden crust one yearns for. The filling is terrific ? a combination of braised lamb shank and mince with a good depth of flavour. But it's lipstick on a pig of a potato dish. Same with the fish pie. There's a lively mustard-tarragon thing going on and the fish has retained its texture - but again, it's let down by the mash.

"Great mash depends on the right potato," you tell us on the packaging for your mashed potato for two. No doubt it does, but it doesn't lie within. Without the redeeming fillings of the other mash abominations, the faults are unforgivable. Texture, flavour, smell and appearance all score nul points. A belly flop.

The diamond in the rough is the mac and cheese. There's a magnificent tang of proper mature cheddar, a lovely crunchy crumb on top, and the inspired addition of al dente cauliflower ? it's two of the finest comfort dishes rolled into one. Then I'm reminded that it's meant to have truffle in it, which it doesn't seem to and doesn't really need anyway. Truffle is a cheffy shortcut for improving a dull dish. Stick it in your spuds instead.

There's nothing here that's entirely without merit, but we've come to expect more of you, Heston. Where's the twist of genius, the sleight of hand, the derring-do? Most importantly, what happened to the "painstaking lengths" to which you'll go to perfect every dish? Frankly, it's all a bit slack.
