PlayStation Store update hitting PAL regions on October 17th, North America on October 23rd

If you feel the current design of the PlayStation Store leaves a lot to be desired, then you'll probably be glad to hear it's being totally revamped. A new UI should do a better job of pushing fresh content at you, and its appearance will be consistent regardless of whether you're outputting in standard or high def. Searching has been improved to handle abbreviations and misspellings, and a dynamic list of suggestions will try to work out what you're looking for as you type. Also, Vita and PSP content will be separated, new filters will be available and content hubs will offer everything linked to a certain title, à la the Xbox 360 Marketplace. Sound good? Well, there's not long to wait - it'll be launching in PAL regions (Europe, Asia, Australia and others) on October 17th, while North Americans will receive it almost a week later, on October 23rd.

Biden walks line between aggressive, domineering

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden mockingly smiled, wagged his finger and couldn't seem to stop interrupting Republican running mate Paul Ryan.

"With all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey," Biden said at one point, during an exchange on foreign policy.

Democrats cheered his sharp tone in the only vice presidential debate. Republicans panned the vice president as disrespectful to his younger opponent.

Biden's aggressive approach stood in stark contrast to President Barack Obama's listless ? and widely panned ? turn on the debate stage last week. Obama, to the dismay of his supporters, clenched his jaw, looked down at his notes and held back his criticism of Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

While Biden went after him, Ryan settled on a smirk for much of the debate ? his first on the national stage. He sipped water and cleared his throat through many of Biden's answers.

Voters watching at home were able to view Biden's smile and Ryan's smirk side-by-side, with most television networks broadcasting the debate on a split screen.

Early on in the wide-ranging debate on domestic and foreign policy issues, Biden leaned back his chair and gave a big grin, often audibly chuckling at Ryan. His laughter sparked a new Twitter handle called "LaughinJoeBiden."

But as the 90-minute debate pressed on, the vice president became increasingly agitated. He wagged his finger at moderator Martha Raddatz. His smile sometimes faded into a scowl.

And walking a fine line between being aggressive and domineering, Biden started interrupting.

"Not mathematically possible," he interjected during a discussion on the budget.

But Biden didn't seem to like it much when Raddatz turned the tables on him, cutting him off during an exchange on unemployment. He spread his hands incredulously, leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed. By the end, Biden had turned serious as he talked about his Catholic faith and other issues.

So how did it play? The early reviews appeared split by party.

Republican strategist Karen Hanretty wrote on Twitter that Ryan gave Biden the "let the crazy uncle speak his mind at Thanksgiving dinner" look.

But Massachusetts Democratic Sen. John Kerry, also taking to Twitter, thought Biden was so convincing that "by the end of this, Ryan may vote for Joe."

The conservative group "Campaign To Defeat Obama" quickly sought to raise money off Biden's "rude and arrogant" performance, sending a fundraising email to supporters asking for contributions.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina retorted: "When the other side is talking about eye rolls and smirks they are losing the debate."

Hey Do It Yourself! Make Your Home Improvement Projects Easier ...

Are you looking for home improvement inspiration? What information do you need to make these repairs? In this article, we will present some useful ideas and information to assist you in completing interesting, fresh home improvement projects with ease.

A great tip for any do it yourself home improvement homeowner, is to take some classes at your local home improvement store. A lot of times the bigger home improvement stores offer classes on many projects. Learn the basics through these classics prior to divining into your own home improvement project.

Don't engage a contractor who expects a large up-front fee. You should only pay about $2,500 upfront for the down payment to begin work, and roughly 10 percent of your total budget after the first day of work. Not one cent more!

You can add a creative back splash in the kitchen by varnishing some wallpaper. Buy wallpaper you like. Begin by taking a measurement of your wall space. Using these measurements, cut the paper a few inches larger to allow some room for error. Apply the paste and allow it to take a few minutes to get tacky, Apply the wallpaper and get rid of air bubbles with a squeegee. Then, trim up the edges with a razor for a clean look. Apply your varnish with a brush. You will love your new back splash and it will save you money.

To make your walls look their best, you do not necessarily need expensive artwork, you can decorate the walls with tiles. You can use wall decals that come in thousands of different designs that will fit any budget.

Motion detector security lights installed outside can add beauty, functionality and security at a surprisingly low cost. With motion sensing lights, there's no need to keep outside lights on throughout the night. Instead, they come on for a few minutes when someone moves nearby. This keeps intruders away even better than regular lights. When they come on it alerts the household that someone is out there.

You can change the look of your bathroom cheaply and easily if desired. New linens such as bath mats and towels, and even a new shower curtain can add a much needed boost to the room. This will instantly give your bathroom an updated look. Plants can brighten a bathroom but you should choose plants that will thrive in the humidity and lack of sunlight.

Ask yourself how long you will be living in your home, prior to committing to home improvement projects. If you're going to be moving soon, it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money on upgrades. While it is best to take care of repairs, save the upgrades and redecorating for the next residents of the home.

If you are starting to redo your bathroom or kitchen you have to ensure your water valve is off so you do not flood the room! It may seem obvious, but homeowners often forget this step and end up with water damage that requires even more renovation.

Replace the old floors in your home. Even though new flooring often carries a higher price tag, the expense more than pays for itself over time or when you go to sell your home. Compared with unsightly or smelly linoleum or shag carpeting, sleek tile or textured hardwood is far superior in terms of appearance and longevity.

Add some protection to all of your floors before painting. Don't let wet paint stain your carpeting or flooring. Layering your floor with old newspapers is an inexpensive method to protect it. Drop cloths and plastic sheeting are also available to protect your floors from paint drips.

If you unsure of where to begin with improvements, you may want to enlist the help of a home design specialist. They can help you budget, gather supplies and do a great job. Renovations do not need to be done on your own; enlist the help of a professional.

If multiple projects are being done in one room, make sure you contemplate the order they need to be done. When replacing cabinets and the floor, you should probably work on the cabinets first. By beginning with the cabinets, any debris that falls down will only land on the floor you're about to replace. Make a detailed plan prior to beginning any improvement, and you'll save yourself some headaches.

If you are about to undertake major renovations to your bathroom, consider making it accessible to handicapped persons. It is not necessary to talk about it extensively, but you should get ready because it may save you a lot of time and effort. When the time comes to put your home on the market, these renovations can add value to your home.

If you are the victim of a recent natural disaster and your home is in need of repair, be careful which contractor you hire. Unfortunately, there have been stories of contractors who have taken advantage of emergency situations and made money off of those who have already suffered. Do the proper research before hiring anyone to repair your home.

Your vision of new home improvements can be turned into reality, with the help of the advice above. The confidence that you need to transform your home should now be something that you have.

Scavenging by vultures can make it extremely difficult for forensic scientists to estimate time of death. One study found that it took 37 days for a flock of vultures to discover a human corpse that had been laid out in an experimental enclosure but only 5 hours to strip the body down to a pile of bones. Researchers are using GPS to discern patterns in the way vultures scatter remains.

Jewish communities grapple with baby boomer retirement boom ...

October 10, 2012

By Neil Rubin, JTA

BALTIMORE (JTA) ? Every Jewish community wants more Raymonde Fiols among its active retirees. The question is whether those communities are prepared to meet the needs she and hundreds of thousands of ?younger seniors? and older ones will have in the near future.

Now 76, Fiols has resided in Las Vegas for the past 11 years. She belongs there to a synagogue, Hadassah and Na?amat USA, a women?s Zionist organization. Her volunteer time largely is spent as president of the Holocaust Survivors Group of Southern Nevada. In spare moments, she and her husband of 56 years, Philip, enjoy the area?s nature parks and attending lectures.

?You have a choice of Jewish involvement, and we?re surrounded by Jewish friends,? Fiols said. ?People look out for each other because a lot of them don?t have their children here, so you get invited for yontif and your friends become family,? she said, using the Yiddish term for holidays.

She and her husband are part of the area?s growing senior population. The Jewish community is thought to have a larger share of people ages 65 and over than America generally, based on statistics from the last National Jewish Population Study and the 2010 U.S. Census. With the baby boomer generation entering the 65+ age group, experts say Jewish institutions will have to work hard to keep up with what is expected to be a growing need for social services and social offerings among Jewish elderly.

Already, Jewish programs ranging from medical assistance initiatives to psychological counseling, adult education and heritage trips are expanding.

Three retirement destinations with high concentrations of older Jews ? Las Vegas, Palm Beach, Fla., and Phoenix, Ariz. ? offer instructive examples of how communities are grappling with the challenges of growing Jewish senior populations.

In 2005, the year of Las Vegas? last Jewish community study, Jews ages 65 and older rose to 67,500, from 55,600 a decade earlier. In greater Phoenix, a 2002 population study found that 20 percent of people in households with Jews were in that age range ? a sizable increase from the 12 percent mark in the previous study, conducted in 1984. A 2005 study by the federation in western Palm Beach County found that about 57 percent of the community ? 78,391 people ? were 65 and older. Meanwhile, a study that same year by the federation in southern Palm Beach County found 61 percent of the community was 65 or older.

?We have the fastest growing Jewish seniors community population in the country,? said Keith Myers, the president and CEO of MorseLife in West Palm Beach, a nonprofit that provides senior living and health care in the area. ?In the next 15 to 20 years, Palm Beach County is going to triple its senior population from 300,000 to 900,000.?

His nonsectarian agency has a $66 million annual budget ? up from about $57 million five years ago. Services provided by the multifaceted operation include short-term rehabilitation, long-term care, independent and assisted living, home care, geriatric care management, adult day care, meals on wheels, and research and education. More is coming, with a $43.6 million expansion is in the works including a 100,000 sq. ft. short-term rehabilitation facility, remodeling of a long-term care building, new space for memory- and vision-impaired residents, and expanded independent living residences.

?Our clients are living longer and we?re dealing with more considerations than ever,? Myers said.

Mirroring the general population, similar expansions are taking place at Jewish retirement homes and centers around the country. Service providers also worry about meeting the needs of elderly people who chose to stay at home, many of them in what?s known as NORCs: naturally occurring retirement communities.

In 2001, the national federation umbrella organization ? now known as the Jewish Federations of North America ? created a NORC Aging in Place Initiative to seek more federal assistance for NORC supportive services efforts, which often are supported with federal and state funds.

At the Las Vegas Senior Lifeline, a nondenominational program run by the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas, federation spending on the program?s kosher meals, transportation to doctors and grocery stores, and light housekeeping has risen to $500,000 ? substantial increase in the past four years, according to Elliot Karp, president and CEO of the Las Vegas federation. The program also gets government dollars.

?No question that?s going to increase in the coming years,? Karp said of the need. ?The number is stable at around 400 people served only because of limitation of resources. We could double it if we had the funds.?

It?s not just social service needs that are important, but social needs. With more active, healthy retirees comes increased demand for educational and social programming.

At the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School of Jewish Learning, which is geared toward all adults, organizers say they?ve seen a significant increase in seniors. In many venues, the majority of participants are retirees. In recent years, that program has expanded to 62 programs in 60 cities, mostly in North America, educating some 5,500 people a week.

Synagogues, too, are retooling for seniors, and new ones are opening in places with growing older-adult populations. In the mid-1990s, Temple Beit Knesset Bamidbar (Synagogue of the Desert) opened up in Sun City Summerlin, a gated community in the Las Vegas area for people age 55 and older. Now the shul has a rabbi, a cantor and more than 850 members. ?On Shabbat, people are congratulated from the pulpit on their anniversaries.

?It takes them forever, because they start with 30 years and 40 years and 50 years and 60 years and up,? Karp said with a chuckle.

Ellie Schwartzberg, vice president of older adults services and Jewish community services at Phoenix?s Jewish Family & Children?s Services, says she?s worried that Jewish communities remain unprepared to help the baby-boomer generation. For example, the community has not begun to put in place the nursing homes that will be required for the growing cases of Alzheimer?s disease.

?I don?t think the community is ready at all for these boomers as they age and need these services,? she said.

In Phoenix, the Jewish community has a NORC project, a hospital chaplaincy program and a Jewish senior center that a few years ago moved from a synagogue into an independent-living facility.

?For young retirees it?s a wonderful place,? Schwartzberg said of Phoenix. ?But we know that a lot of people move back to their family once they become infirm or need more help, or sometimes even the family moves here.?

Karp said that in Las Vegas, which is now talking about building its first Jewish retirement home, the dual challenge is clear.

?We know that in our community the senior adult population is significant and will continue to grow,? he said. ?We know we have to do a better job of providing better services both for the needy elderly and the ?well elderly.??

For baby boomers, however, the bottom line in choosing a retirement destination may be an array of quality-of-life considerations, of which senior services is just one.

?Even though you have the big developments and the clubhouses, there?s so much out here,? Fiols said of Las Vegas. ?You have choices and I?m not talking about gambling. Come on out and you?ll have a grand time.?

Engineered flies spill secret of seizures

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Scientists have observed the neurological mechanism behind temperature-dependent -- febrile -- seizures by genetically engineering fruit flies to harbor a mutation analogous to one that causes epileptic seizures in people. In addition to contributing the insight on epilepsy, their new study also highlights the first use of genetic engineering to swap a human genetic disease mutation into a directly analogous gene in a fly.

In a newly reported set of experiments that show the value of a particularly precise but difficult genetic engineering technique, researchers at Brown University and the University of California-Irvine have created a Drosophila fruit fly model of epilepsy to discern the mechanism by which temperature-dependent seizures happen.

The researchers used a technique called homologous recombination -- a more precise and sophisticated technique than transgenic gene engineering -- to give flies a disease-causing mutation that is a direct analogue of the mutation that leads to febrile epileptic seizures in humans. They observed the temperature-dependent seizures in whole flies and also observed the process in their brains. What they discovered is that the mutation leads to a breakdown in the ability of certain cells that normally inhibit brain overactivity to properly regulate their electrochemical behavior.

In addition to providing insight into the neurology of febrile seizures, said Robert Reenan, professor of biology at Brown and a co-corresponding author of the paper in the Journal of Neuroscience, the study establishes

"This is the first time anyone has introduced a human disease-causing mutation overtly into the same gene that flies possess," Reenan said.

Engineering seizures

Homologous recombination (HR) starts with the transgenic technique of harnessing a transposable element (jumping gene) to insert a specially mutated gene just anywhere into the fly's DNA, but then goes beyond that to ultimately place the mutated gene into exactly the same position as the natural gene on the X chromosome. HR does this by outfitting the gene to be handled by the cell's own DNA repair mechanisms, essentially tricking the cell into putting the mutant copy into exactly the right place. Reenan's success with the technique allowed him to win a special grant from the National Institutes of Health last year.

The new paper is a result of that grant and Reenan's collaboration with neurobiologist Diane O'Dowd at UC-Irvine. Reenan and undergraduate Jeff Gilligan used HR to insert a mutated version of the para gene in fruit flies that is a direct parallel of the mutation in the human gene SCN1A that causes febrile seizures in people.

When the researchers placed flies in tubes and bathed the tubes in 104-degree F water, the mutant fruit flies had seizures after 20 seconds in which their legs would begin twitching followed by wing flapping, abdominal curling, and an inability to remain standing. After that, they remained motionless for as long as half an hour before recovering. Unaltered flies, meanwhile, exhibited no temperature-dependent seizures.

The researchers also found that seizure susceptibility was dose-dependent. Female flies with mutant strains of both copies of the para gene (females have two copies of the X chromosome) were the most susceptible to seizures. Those in whom only one copy of the gene was a mutant were less likely than those with two to seize, but more likely than the controls.

While the researchers at Brown compared the seizure susceptibility of whole flies, O'Dowd, lead author Lei Sun, and colleagues at Irvine studied individual fly neurons implicated in seizure activity to see how they behaved as the brains were heated. What their measurements revealed in the mutant flies were flaws in how "GABAergic" neurons take in sodium through channels in the cell membrane. Under normal circumstances, the neurons inhibit brain overactivity. But the mutants' mishandling of sodium led them to fail electrically.

"When [O'Dowd's team] isolates those currents due to the sodium channel, which is what's mutated in this case, and she compares the normal animals to the disease-model animals, what happens is the mutant channels pass too much current," Reenan said. "The channels open too easily and they take more effort to close. They open too soon and they close too late. That effect is magnified at higher temperature. Then the neuron can't send any [inhibitory] signals."

Searching for therapies

With a useful genetic model of epilepsy in fruit flies, Reenan said he is optimistic that researchers can now look for potential treatments for the disease. The next step, he said, is to use the practice of "forward genetics" to look for further mutations that might counter febrile seizures.

Given thousands of flies with model of the disease, scientists can purposely subject them to different DNA-altering conditions and then look to see if any flies lose their propensity for seizures. Among those that do, the researchers can then identify the specific genetic alteration responsible and determine whether that could ever be clinically applied. For example, if it turns out that a mutation proves therapeutic because it causes a certain protein to be overexpressed, then perhaps that protein could be refined into some kind of biologic pharmaceutical.

Reenan said he'd expect to see researchers follow a similar roadmap for other diseases as well.

"Knock-in of specific disease-causing mutations into the fly genome has the potential to provide a rapid and low-cost platform for studying the cellular mechanisms of heritable human diseases," the authors wrote. "In addition, knock-in flies can be used in combination with forward genetic screens to identify suppressor and/or enhancer mutations, a strategy that is challenging in humans and rodent models but well established in Drosophila."

In addition to Reenan, Gilligan, O'Dowd and Sun, other authors are Cynthia Staber of Brown and Ryan Schutte and Vivian Nguyen of UC Irvine.

In addition to the National Institutes of Health, the Howard Hughes Medical Institue and the Ellison Medical Foundation funded the research.
