DETROIT ? The 2013 Cadillac SRX promises to be one of the cool-tech leaders, with lots of optional gear to give the crossover the feel of a home theater.

A $1,595 rear-seat entertainment package debuts on SRX Luxury packages with navigation, along with Performance and Premium trim models.

The package gets a new cordless remote control designed with kids in mind and shaped like a video-game controller.

The package also features a Blu-Ray DVD player linked to Cadillac's CUE infotainment system. The package includes two 8-inch flip-up rear screens. GM says that with CUE, users in the 2013 SRX can pair up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled devices at once, including mobile phones, SD cards, USBs and MP3 players.

"For the first time, rear-seat passengers can connect to and manage their own music players and playlists," GM said. "The addition of Blu-Ray allows families the same video quality on the road as they're accustomed to at home."

It added: "The SRX becomes a home theater on wheels."

GM said it used a focus group of "kids to test and interact with the new rear-seat entertainment features."

Edmunds says: It's the era of the car as family room.

Do You Have a ?Spam? Email Account? | AllClear ID

Jackie here.? Back before high powered spam filters I had two email accounts: one for daily use and a second to give out when I was worried about spam. I hated my inbox filling with solicitations for dating services and bodily enhancement pills, so I used this method to protect my real email address. It worked great for a while until I got tired of managing two separate accounts. Eventually, I stopped my spam email account and just stuck with one main email address.

Surprisingly I got a lot less spam than I expected. Turns out spam filters have come a long way in the past several years. The spammy messages that once filled my inbox now automatically found their way into a spam folder. I was amazed, and to be honest a little annoyed that I had maintained the separate accounts for so many years.

Spam & ID Theft

Avoiding spam can help you to avoid id theft. Spam messages often solicit your information and attempt to trick you in to giving away personal data that can be used to commit id theft. When you don?t see spam, you don?t have to worry about being tricked, even the best of us can be fooled by a clever email. Spam filters make checking email a lot less irritating, but they also play an important role in id theft prevention.

Spam Filters

Spam filters can differ from email provider to email provider. Some email hosts don?t have a spam filter, which can substantially increase the amount of spam you receive. How effective are the filters? A study released earlier this year by Cascade Insights indicates that spam filters can effectively reduce the amount of spam emails you receive.

The study reviewed three of the most popular filtered email options: Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo as well as one unfiltered email account. The email addresses used in the study were planted in places where spam might originate. After several weeks the email inboxes were evaluated to determine which spam filter was most effective.

Gmail and Hotmail were out front and very close (Hotmail slightly more effective than Gmail), with Yahoo coming in third. You can check out the full study here along with tips for avoiding spam. Shortly after this study was released, Google responded. They feel that the study results were not accurate and that their spam filter is actually the most effective on the market. Check out Gmail?s response to the study on the NY Times blog.

Which spam filter is the best? I don?t know, but what I do know is that using one can lower your id theft risk. Using two different email addresses used to be an effective way to avoid spam, but with modern spam filters, the extra effort might not be making a difference.

Do you use one email address or two? How do you avoid spam emails?

Bikes are a Key Tool To Help Kids Live Long Healthy Lives ...

Nike has nearly always been expert at touching our hearts and hopes in its advertising. Now, the company that coined that cultural meme "Just Do It" is telling the world how to do this: get people moving in order to start to lengthen human lifespans recently cut by inactivity and overeating.

In the video above and an accompanying report entitled Designed to Move, Nike and its partners make clear that it is the world's kids that can expect to live lives up to five years shorter than their parents.

The report blames the "widespread physical inactivity epidemic" for a decrease in both economic and emotional well-being. It doesn't mention the fact that overeating, and less nutrition and more chemicals in our overly-packaged and overly-processed foods also play a role.

But the solution, the report says, is clear:

"We must find ways to integrate the physical activity we?ve lost, back into our lives."

The U.S. has had some of the most startling declines in physical activity - a 32% drop since 1965. By contrast, the UK's levels of physical activity have dropped just 25% since 1961. In China, with its rapid industrialization, the decrease is even more marked - just since 1991, physical activity has declined 45%.

Results of the inactivity are accrued over a lifetime: more obesity; more missed school and work; more health care costs; lower fitness; lower earnings; and finally, premature death.

Reversing these trends requires systematic changes, the report says, and the bicycle plays a key role in getting people more active.

The vision is to get kids "running, jumping, and kicking to reach their greatest potential" and the plan is really two-fold - first get kids interested in physical activity via positive experiences at an early age - before they are 10 years old. Next, integrate physical activity into daily life.

That's where the bicycle comes in. In order to have physical activity, the report states that some physical activity must be designed into the built environment; different sectors of society have to share physical activity and fitness goals; "misaligned" incentives must be challenged, and "signals" that reinforce the current norm must also be challenged.

Translation? Using the bike as an example, it would be: Build safety-oriented bicycle lanes and paths, make it a goal to get kids to bike (and walk) to school, take away the incentives (lack of safety) that cause parents to drive kids, and encourage bike training and bike sports.

Of course, bikes are only one of many ways that kids can and should get moving. But when you are talking about integrating physical activity into our regular daily lives, bikes are superb because we spend a significant amount of time moving around - bikes move us and our limbs and heart rates.

In the "Designed to Move" report, Portland, Oregon, Ciclovias, Sustrans (UK), and the Safe Routes to School program all get special mention as good examples of getting biking into people's lives.

Novel Blood Test to Detect Advanced Prostate Cancers | TopNews ...

A group of researchers at the two institutes, Institute of Cancer Research, London and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, has come up with a novel kind of blood test, which they say will be able to reveal about prostate cancer.

Lead researcher Professor Johann de Bono was of the view that their newly developed blood test mimics barcode, which is able to predict serious prostate cancers. It takes the help of gene activity to know the severity of the cancer.

Another plus point being mentioned by Bono was that the test can be used along with PSA test. This will further increase the diagnosis rate. "Prostate cancer is a very diverse disease - some people live with it for years without symptoms but for others it can be aggressive and life-threatening", said Bono while explaining the reason for developing the test.

They were of the fact that changes in blood are a great way to know details about prostate cancer. While keeping this thing in the mind, the study researchers prepared this test. In order to reach at the above given result, the study researchers carried out a test on 100 patients with prostate cancer. After assuring about the test, study researchers will tailor it further as per one's needs.

Sprint adds LG Mach, Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and tri-mode USB dongle to fall LTE lineup

Sprint adds two LG phones, the Galaxy Tablet 2 101 and a USB dongle to its LTE lineup

If simple vanity trinkets don't excite you, Sprint has something else to tempt you in -- four new LTE devices. The new line-up includes two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle, so hopefully something for everyone. The phones? The 13-megapixel toutin' Optimus G (as we suspected) and Mach (a cheaper, 1.2GHz dual-core, 4-inch, 1080p capable QWERTY ICS phone), both by LG. If you need a little more screen real-estate, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will be joining the other Koreans with its 1.5GHz dual-cores and 1,200 x 800-screened ICS on the good ship Sprint too. Happy with your notebook, and just want the service? Sprint's adding a Plug-in-Connect USB dongle to the menu also. No deets on cost and dates we're afraid, with "fall" being all the info we've got right now. Feel free to delve into the PR after the break, in the meantime though.

Opinion: The Corcoran's Board Has Lost the Public's Faith ...

An opinion piece in the Washington Post suggests that it might be time for the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College, an important Washington cultural institution, to consider firing all of its board members.

Public outcry arose this summer in response to the news that the Corcoran was considering selling its iconic 115-year-old building across from the White House and moving to the suburbs. The nonprofit held community meetings in which gallery leaders, supporters, and others explained the case for moving and heard arguments from the public about why the institution should stay where it is. Absent from those meetings, however, was input from most members of the Corcoran?s board, according to the article.

Despite the presence of one or two board members at the meetings, much of the board has remained silent about the proposed move. Some experts say the board had already made the decision to sell and that the community meetings were held simply to pacify the public. A spokeswoman for the Corcoran denied such accusations.

The editorial argues, however, that given the Corcoran?s position in the community, ?the public needs to be able to directly address the board, question it, and decide if these are the right people to be entrusted with what many feel could be suicidal changes.? It recommends that the Corcoran board avoid continued public anger by ?being more open and engaging the public? and that any decision to move should involve not only a period of public comment but also a vote from the public.

Paving the way for commercial fusion power plants

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? Latest results from the Joint European Torus (JET) fusion device are giving researchers increasing confidence in prospects for the next-generation ITER project, the international experiment that is expected to pave the way for commercial fusion power plants. Operation with a new lining inside JET has demonstrated the suitability of materials for the much larger and more powerful ITER device.

JET, Europe's premier magnetic confinement fusion facility, based at Culham, UK, has completed eleven months of tests to simulate the environment inside ITER and to prototype key components. For this purpose JET has been successfully transformed into a 'mini-ITER' with a wall made of the same materials -- beryllium and tungsten -- that ITER plans to use. Initial results will be summarised by Dr Francesco Romanelli, Leader of the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA) and JET Leader, at the IAEA Fusion Energy Conference in San Diego, U.S. on October 8.

At the heart of tokamak fusion reactors like JET is a ring-shaped vacuum vessel in which very hot plasma is confined using magnetic fields. Selecting the correct materials for the inner wall of this vessel is essential. Firstly to minimise 'pollution' when small amounts of wall materials enter the plasma, and secondly to prevent the fusion fuels from becoming trapped in the wall. ITER will use beryllium for the main wall and tungsten (with its higher melting point) for the floor of the chamber -- the 'divertor' -- where plasma is exhausted and heat loads are greatest. A 20-month engineering upgrade during 2010 and 2011 installed a new plasma-facing wall inside JET to validate these materials for ITER.

From the first test in August 2011, the beryllium and tungsten lining enabled more reliable plasmas to be produced. Crucially, researchers from the 27 European fusion laboratories which participate in JET have found that the amount of fuel being retained in the wall is at least ten times less than in the previous, carbon-based, configuration. The results achieved may lead ITER to drop plans for an initial phase of operation with carbon and adopt a beryllium-tungsten wall from the outset, bringing a significant saving in time and cost for the project.

Experiments at JET will restart in early 2013, with the goal of demonstrating plasma performance even beyond ITER's expectations. Looking further ahead, EFDA is already planning a full 'dress rehearsal' for ITER -- an experimental campaign at JET using the optimum deuterium-tritium fuel mix that is needed for high-power fusion operation. JET is the only device currently able to run fusion plasmas with tritium, and exploiting these capabilities will be a crucial part of ITER preparations. ITER Director General Osamu Motojima praised the work being done at JET during a visit this summer and has been discussing collaborations with EFDA on future experiments.

Dr Francesco Romanelli said: "These results are very encouraging for ITER. JET is getting as close to ITER conditions as any present-day fusion device can. If this performance is scaled up, ITER will be successful and take a huge step towards the goal of commercial fusion power."

JET has largely formed the basis for ITER's design and is an ideal test-bed. We hope to open up new collaborations with ITER partners as we prepare for full deuterium-tritium tests in 2015. Already we are working with Indian colleagues on magnetic coils for suppressing plasma instabilities. I hope to build more partnerships so JET's unique capabilities can be used for the benefit of the worldwide fusion programme."
