Andrew Tindall's Blog: CEO resignation creates perfect storm for University takeover of SU ? students should prepare to fight

Main logo of Aberystwyth University Students' Union

Main logo of Aberystwyth University Students? Union

This afternoon came the?shock announcement that Geraint Edwards, the Chief Executive of the recently renamed?Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Aberystwyth University Students? Union?has resigned after 14 years of dedicated and committed service. Whilst the SU President took the opportunity to talk up the vague managerial bullshit bingo notion of ?student experience?, I believe there?s something far more important at stake from this development:?the autonomy of our Students? Union.

In some sense, we?ve gradually seen our autonomy slipping for several years, after the University became more heavily involved in the then-Guild?s finances when there was a large trading downturn in the mid-to-late 00s. This has been?occurring?in tandem with a block grant that, ?already small compared to other students unions, has seen real-terms cuts due to constant freezes and below-inflation rises, thereby widening our financial woes ? and our dependence on the university.

Recently, we?ve also seen small-scale refurbishment and redevelopment projects in the Union, the vast majority of which have been paid for through the University agreeing to freeze a small portion of the loan repayments to them that makes up a significant amount of the Union?s debt. The idea being that by temporarily reducing one of their income streams (loan repayments), the University can recoup its investment in a more secure and consistent way over time by propping up the Union marginally, whilst imposing additional restrictions and controls upon the operation of the Union.

At the start of this new academic year, much fuss was raised when people discovered that Cwrt Mawr Bar, previously run by the Students? Union, had been closed and taken over for conversion by the University without any student input or announcement. Although the Union was reimbursed, it?s still unclear if it was via deferral of a portion of loan repayments as we?ve seen before, or with actual cash.

It?s no secret that there have been discussions over the University taking over the services currently provided by our Union, and coupled with the situation we?ve been crawling through for years, as well as the university?s desire to amalgamate departments and services into combined ?commercially viable? entities; the addition of this resignation means?the perfect storm is now in place for a University take over of commercial services in our Students? Union ? everything could be up for grabs, and students would be the ones to lose out.

The University wouldn?t have to look far if it did want to take over ? earlier this year the University of Bolton controversially ousted the SU President, changed the locks on her office, and installed a university-appointed governor to replace her. Finance was used a reason in that instance, and given our financial debts to the University, and all the repayment and lease agreements that exist between us, it wouldn?t be hard for the university to make the case for commercial services to be brought under their control, with or without reimbursement or student input.

But just as the University need not look far, nor do we students have to. ?Should worst come to worst, and the University do decide to make a move in the future to change the nature of our Union, be it taking over parts of it themselves, or even forcing us to sell off to outside companies, students must be prepared to stand up and defend the autonomy of our Students? Union,? just like they did in Bolton,??and make it clear that Aberystwyth Students? Union is a democratic and autonomous institution owned and run by its members ? students, and we may have to fight to keep it that way.

Our Union is laid bare, and we can?t afford to even risk losing half of it to the University, or to anyone.

This afternoon came the?shock announcement that Geraint Edwards, the Chief Executive of the recently renamed?Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Aberystwyth University Students? Union?has resigned after 14 years of dedicated and committed service....

Clifford Johnson Shares Experience ... - Fatherhood Channel

Operation Sacred Trust, ?OST,? funded through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, helps provide housing stability for homeless and at-risk Veteran families in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. OST is a collaborative effort of Carrfour Supportive Housing, PAIRS Foundation, Henderson Behavioral Health, and Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida. The program served more than 1,000 Veterans and their family members in South Florida since starting-up in September 2011, including ending homelessness for hundreds. FatherhoodChannel.com is pleased to profile some of the OST professionals on the frontline of ending homelessness for America?s Veterans.

    Clifford Johnson

Clifford Johnson shares his experience overcoming homelessness and addictions to help at-risk and homeless Veterans through Operation Sacred Trust?s weekly Resiliency classes in South Florida.

    Clifford Johnson
    Resiliency?Instructor
    Operation Sacred Trust

What inspires you to serve Veterans?

The fact that Veterans are selfless people who put their own lives on the line for our country.

What is a story/experience serving a Veteran family that stands out for you?

What stands out for me the most is a woman who came to Resiliency class several months ago who seemed to be at the edge of life. The tears that flowed out of her during the?PAIRS Emptying the Emotional Jug exercise felt like they?d been there for years, maybe longer. Before the exercise, she told me that she felt that her pain was too much to express and that she had no one to confide in. Afterwards, it was as if a thousand pounds had been lifted from her body and spirit. She had such a sense of relief, gratitude, and her despair became hope. I?ll never forget the appreciation in her hug, eyes or the smile that I suspect was her first in quite a long time. I was so grateful to have been able to serve her as a Veteran who had given so much of her life to serve our country.

What?s your hope for the impact your work at Operation Sacred Trust has on the lives of the Veterans you serve?

My hope is that no matter what a Veteran may be feeling and going through, they know there is someone who cares and that help is just a phone call away.

Beyond your work serving Veterans, what personal connections do you have with the military/VA community?

My father was a Korean War Veteran and my own experience with?homelessness?through drug abuse and overcoming addictions helps me have enormous empathy for the men and women we serve. My life experiences and all that I?ve overcome give me a personal connection with the emotional stress?and?feelings of despair many of our Veterans are going through when they reach Operation Sacred Trust. I love being of help.

What?s one of the lessons you?ve learned from your work helping end homelessness for Veterans?

I learned that we, the American people, owe each of them our very best when they come home. Those who returned home many years ago from past wars need us too.

10 ways to exercise without trying | Bodybuilding, Supplements ...

No time for exercise? Try these sneaky tricks to work out with almost no effort at all?

    1) Wash the car
Go on, it needs a good clean, anyway. If you?ve got a van, then you?ll really work up a sweat. Make sure to switch hands when you?re scrubbing to get a good, even workout.

    2) Get off your trolley
No, not like that! Opt for a shopping basket rather than a trolley if you?re not planning a huge shop, and really work your upper body. If you really must use a trolley, once you?ve bagged everything up, carry it back to the car by hand.

    3) Spring clean in summer
Yep, that?s right. But we?re not talking a regular dust ?n? wipe here; we?re talking moving the furniture, scrubbing the walls and all that jazz. It?ll get your heart going, and you?ll be rewarded with a sparkling house!

    4) See the sights
How well do you know your local area? Set aside a day with friends to walk around the local sights, as if you were tourists. You may be surprised how many calories you burn in a day spent scurrying around on your feet.

    5) Stairway to fitness
An oldie but a goldie: don?t even think about calling for that lift! Dragging yourself up the stairs might seem tough at first, but your fitness will step up in no time.

    6) Have a break
Get into the habit of exercising whenever the TV show you?re watching hits an advert break. You can do crunches, run on the spot or even drop down into the plank position. Try to wait until your dinner goes down first, though.

    7) Trim at your chair
If you work in an office, the chances are your posture will suffer as a result of hours sitting at a desk. Use your upper back, shoulders and abdominal muscles to maintain a good posture and try squeezing an air-disc between your thighs to work your adductors. Better still, sit on a Swiss ball.

    8) Get in a fix
Burn those calories by getting stuck into some DIY around the house. Sanding walls, tiling floors and building cabinets all require serious strength, ladies.

    9) Squeeze!
Stuck in traffic yet again? Don?t sit and stress: work your pelvic floor. You can even do it on the bus, but try not to scare the people around you!

    10) Be a green goddess
Do you always duck out of cutting the lawn? Heaving a mower around is a great workout for your core, legs and arms ? and is a major calorie burner.

10 DIY Convenience Foods | Care2 Healthy Living

Convenience foods are what they say they are: convenient. The trouble with convenience foods is that they?re highly processed and often come with a hefty dose of excessive packaging. For busy folks, moving entirely away from convenience foods might not be doable, but even replacing a few of the processed foods you normally buy with homemade alternatives can improve your health and help the planet! Here?s how you can make your own convenience foods at home.

This month is October Unprocessed, and what better time to talk about ditching chemical-filled packaged foods in favor of whole foods you can cook at home, right? It might feel like there?s no way you can find the time to cook from scratch, and the trick to making this easy on yourself if cooking in batches.

    Batch Cooking

Why make a dozen muffins when it takes just as long to make two dozen? Keep some in the fridge to eat this week and freeze the rest for next week.

The same thing goes for pre-made meals. You don?t have to cook every night to ditch the TV dinners! Spend some time on a weekend and make a few large dishes that you can eat for the week. If possible, make some dishes that you can portion out and freeze for those times when you aren?t able to cook.

The idea here is to take advantage of any free time you do have to bank food in the fridge and freezer for the rest of the time.

    Try a Swap!

Are you worried that you?ll get sick of eating that same pasta casserole for a few weeks in a row? This is where a food swap can come in handy. Get a few friends involved, and have each person contribute one or two large dishes. At the swap, everyone can bring containers and serve up their share of everything. You get lots of variety, some quality time with friends, and you save time and money!

Need some DIY convenience food inspiration? Check out these simple ideas on the next page!

Best Places to See Fall Color | HGTV Gardens

Clockwise from upper left: Vermont fall colors. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Great Smoky Mountains. Aspen. Youghiogheny River Gorge.

Growing up in the upper peninsula of Michigan, I was lucky enough to witness some pretty amazing fall colors each year, the kind people would drive hours to see. In lower Michigan where I live now, the colors are still pretty great but not quite as stunning. This time of year, I always feel a little nostalgic for the brilliant red, orange and yellow leaf shows of my childhood, and get inspired to look for other great fall foliage destinations across the country. Here are a handful of the best:

    Great Smoky Mountains

Great Smoky Mountains. Image courtesy of Ann Hornyak/Flickr

Boasting over 100 species of native trees, the mountains between North Carolina and Tennessee are home to some of the most stunning fall color in the nation, including deep purples and crimson among the usual yellows and golds. In some areas of the park the colors last until mid-November. Check in with the National Park Service for updates on fall foliage.

    Vermont

    Vermont's luscious fall colors.

With its cooler temps, rolling hills and valleys, and abundant forests, Vermont offers show-stopping fall color throughout the state, (the rippling elevations of Hogback Mountain, pictured above, put on a particularly fantastic show.) Check out this Vermont foliage site, which offers up-to-date information about Vermont?s foliage and where to go for the best colors week-by-week.

    Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI

Most of northern Michigan, including the upper peninsula north of the Mackinac Bridge, offers great fall foliage. But I have a special place in my heart for this stunning natural area, located in my birthplace of Munising, Michigan ? a small town on the shores of Lake Superior, about 45 miles from Marquette. Pictured Rocks offers a variety of ruggedly beautiful settings that really show off that fall foliage. In this region, color shows early and is just starting to peak now.

    Aspen, CO

The Rocky Mountains? rugged terrain is home to abundant groves of aspen, those tall, white-trunked trees that are so quintessentially Colorado. And in Colorado, Aspen is said to offer the most impressive fall color, with yellows, oranges and even occasional reds contrasting against evergreens and gray mountain peaks. ?Check Colorado.com for driving tour routes.

    Laurel Highlands Scenic Byway, PA

Youghiogheny River Gorge. Image courtesy of Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau

Come autumn, this densely forested scenic route looks almost like a watercolor painting, offering brilliant pops of color nestled amid rivers and waterfalls, rolling hills and quaint farms. For the adventurous, the?Youghiogheny River Gorge, pictured above, is particularly impressive when seen from the vantage point of a whitewater rafting expedition, but if you?d rather stay dry, peruse this list of suggested driving tours.

Recommend your favorite place in the HGTVGardens community, to see glorious fall colors.

Is alternative medicine safe for kids? | MNN - Mother Nature Network

In 1992, two Iowans crafted legislation that led to Congress? creation of the Office of Alternative Medicine or OAM. Sen. Tom Harkin claimed bee pollen had cured his hay fever and Rep. Berkeley Bedell swore that cow colostrum had rid him of Lyme disease.

    ?

    ?

By 2007, the percentage for children had grown to 12 percent, a modest gain, but nonetheless it begs posing the question: Is alternative medicine safe for kids?

    ?

The National Institutes of Health?s Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCAM)?s website lists some reasonable arguments for why a parent should not blindly seek and alternative therapy administered to their child:
    • Children are not small adults. Their bodies can react differently from adults' bodies to medical therapies, including?CAM
    • CAM therapies have not been well studied in?children
    • "Natural" does not necessarily mean "safe"; CAM therapies may have side effects

    ?

The top five therapies, according to NCAM, are:

    • Natural products
    • Chiropractic/osteopathic
    • Deep breathing
    • Yoga
    • Homeopathy

    ?

    Supplements for kids
Omega-3 supplements, according to the NIH, were the most commonly used nonvitamin/nonmineral natural product taken by adults, and the second most commonly taken by children. But supplements can act like drugs, and many have not been tested in pregnant women, nursing mothers or?children, says the NIH.

    ?

Alternative medicine for kids with chronic disease
In the case of cerebral palsy (CP), the CP International Research Foundation?s stance on alternative therapies is that they are dubious at best. A critique of alternative therapies, originally published in Clinical Pediatrics, analyzed three modalities for kids with developmental disabilities.

    ?

The paper?s author evaluated one lesser-known form of CAM: hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which involves breathing higher levels of oxygen than normal. It costs $4,000 (or $100 per session; 40 treatments is the norm, says the research) but is no more effective for the treatment of CP than pressurized air. The study?s conclusion: ?There is no good clinical evidence to support the use of these 3 alternative treatments for cerebral palsy.?

    ?

But Dr. Karen Moody, founder and director of the Integrative Medicine and Palliative Care Team (IMPACT) at Children?s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx, New York, believes alternative care for kids, mixed with conventional treatment, can be effective in alleviating symptoms of chronic diseases like cancer.

    ?

?The symptoms of incurable diseases are often difficult to treat, especially when a kid is on a myriad of medications; alternative medicine can improve the quality of life without having to add more drugs or medicine,? says Moody, whose program offers bedside yoga instruction; aromatherapy and massage therapy; Reiki; herbal medicine and dietary supplement consultations; acupuncture and other interventions, all while the kids in the program undergo essential cure-directed treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

    ?

Studies on alternative medicine for kids do exist
Moody says ?it?s just not true? that there is no evidence supporting the efficacy of alternative therapies for kids. ?There are plenty of studies now on what we would call complimentary modalities in addressing symptoms. They are small in number and not as robust and well designed as placebo-controlled sub trials,? Moody says.

    ?

Moody adds that pharmaceutical companies also lack properly designed trials and clinical proof of their drugs' efficacy on kids. The biggest reason, though, that evidence is lacking in studying alternative medicine for children, according to Moody, comes down to funding.

    ?

But Moody, whose program is in the midst of a clinical trial enrollment, notes that yoga has been proven to manage pain. After all, she?s seen it happen with several pediatric cancer patients in her program.

    ?

Many other practitioners would probably agree with Moody?s assertion, but there are too many variables to unequivocally assert that yoga alleviates pain, according to a meta-analysis published in Complimentary Therapies in Medicine, which concludes that for now, yoga merely has the ?potential for alleviating pain.?

    ?

Biggest risk can be dismissing conventional treatment

Whether it?s yoga for your kid?s pain, massage for anxiety or acupuncture for nausea, alternative medicine for kids can be dangerous, especially if the practitioner administering it doesn?t have proper credentialing and is unfamiliar with a child?s medical condition.

    ?

But the biggest risk, says Moody, is when parents choose to completely avoid a conventional therapy.

    ?

?When I have families that want to explore and pursue alternatives, I have to first identify if there?s a clear and safe and effective conventional remedy," says Moody, who presents a hypothetical situation, yet one she?s dealt with before: ?If the parents of a kid with leukemia didn?t want their child to receive chemotherapy, I?d say to them, ?There?s really good data that supports that your child could be cured with chemotherapy.'"

    ?

Moody says she also would validate their belief in alternative medicine, telling the parents that the child?s symptoms would be mitigated with acupuncture, and would be in the parents' best interest to try both approaches.

    ?

Angela Yvonne, a licensed acupuncturist and the senior career services adviser at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, maintains that acupuncture is safe for everyone, even infants.

    ?

?Acupuncture can bring immediate relief of colic and digestive problems in newborns,? says Yvonne, who says she has administered acupuncture to a 1-week-old baby.

    ?

So now that you have more information, would you have your newborn stuck with needles if he was crying hysterically? The bottom line, says Moody: ?With alternative medicine, we can provide support when there is no other option in the conventional realm."
