Childhood virus RSV shows promise against adult cancer

ScienceDaily (Sep. 6, 2012) ? RSV, a virus that causes respiratory infections in infants and young children, selectively kills cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone, researchers from the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio said.

Santanu Bose, Ph.D., of the School of Medicine, is the inventor on a pending U.S. patent of RSV as an oncolytic therapy. This represents a new use for the virus. Bandana Chatterjee, Ph.D., of the School of Medicine and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, is the co-inventor. Oncolytic viruses preferentially infect and damage cancer cells.

Dr. Bose, associate professor of microbiology and immunology, studied the immune response of normal and cancerous cells to RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). During these studies he discovered RSV's oncolytic properties. Dr. Bose next worked with Dr. Chatterjee, professor of molecular medicine, to test RSV in her mouse model of prostate cancer. Those results again showed a robust anti-cancer effect of RSV.

In July, CZ BioMed Corp. of Tampa, Fla., licensed the oncolytic use of RSV in an agreement with South Texas Technology Management (STTM), a regional University of Texas technology-transfer office managed by the Health Science Center. RSV is already showing effectiveness in human trials abroad, according to a company statement.

Dr. Bose, whose work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, said, "This is an exciting development because this is a homegrown invention that is being tested in humans, and therefore this scientific discovery has direct clinical, translational relevance."

"We are pleased that CZ BioMed has agreed to work with us to commercialize Dr. Bose's and Dr. Chatterjee's exciting discovery to efficiently target and treat different forms of cancer," said STTM Executive Director Arjun Sanga, J.D., assistant vice president for technology transfer at the UT Health Science Center.

Dr. Chatterjee said it is important that the virus killed tumors even in mice with competent immune systems. This mirrors human patients who have functioning immune defenses. RSV also worked whether it was injected directly into the tumor or systemically through the abdomen. "This is important because there are some tumors to which you can inject the drug directly, whereas others you can't and a drug must work systemically," Dr. Chatterjee said.

Her work on the RSV project is funded by a Merit-Review grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), a VA Senior Research Career Scientist Award, and a grant to Drs. Bose and Chatterjee from the National Cancer Institute.

RSV is expected to be safe because it is a children's virus -- it does not infect adults. It also only infects the lungs. Dr. Bose explained why RSV grows only in tumors, not healthy cells: "It is because of the immune response. Normal cells have weapons to shoot down viruses, but cancer cells have lost their anti-viral arsenal. For this reason viruses can establish themselves in a tumor, grow and induce cell death."

Information from CZ BioMed notes: "Ultimately, the results from human trials overseas have been extremely successful and exciting to date, with minimal side effects as compared to traditional chemo or radiation therapies." The company's statement also indicates its plan to conduct a clinical trial with oncolytic RSV in the U.S.

In a series of papers between 2009 and 2011, Drs. Bose, Chatterjee and colleagues advanced the RSV anti-cancer construct. The animal results were particularly exciting -- mice with prostate tumors were treated with the virus and within a week the tumors were gone. "We kept the mice for four months, and the tumors never came back," Dr. Bose said.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart to Make Public Appearances

As originally scheduled, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will both make public appearances tonight. But they won't be doing so together.

Pattinson will be joined by other costars at the MTV Video Music Awards, taking the stage to present new footage of Breaking Dawn Part 2; Stewart, who was initially booked to join her ex-boyfriend and fellow castmates, will be north of the border.

She has hopped a plane and will walk the red carpet of the Toronto Film Festival for the On the Road premiere.

Fans are now left to wonder when, if ever, Rob and Kristen will appear at the same event.

Sources say Ashley Greene may replace Stewart at various stops on the upcoming Breaking Dawn press tour, although Pattinson has supposedly volunteered to walk with Kristen down its red carpet.

The only thing we know for sure: THG will be covering this estranged couple's every last move, every step of the way.

Nigeria uncovers cocaine-stuffed roasted chicken

(AP) ? The roasted chickens had an unusual stuffing ? $150,000 worth of cocaine, according to Nigerian police.

A Nigerian mechanic who struggled in Brazil for more than six years had hoped the drugs would buy him a life of luxury in his native land, Nigerian authorities said Monday.

"This was like a retirement plan for him," said Mitchell Ofoyeju, spokesman for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The accused was arrested over the weekend at the airport in Lagos after he came in from Sao Paulo with 2.6 kilograms (5.7 pounds) of cocaine, Ofoyeju said. Photos from the agency showed egg-shaped packages wrapped in gold aluminum foil and tucked into the browned chickens.

The suspect, Vincent Chegini Chinweuwa, could not immediately be reached for comment as he remained in custody Monday.

Nigeria is a major transit point for drugs coming from Latin America and going to Europe or the United States but recent security improvements are cutting into that dubious distinction.

After a Nigerian man allegedly attempted to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner in 2009, Nigeria started installing airport scanners and sought training for its agents. Ofoyeju says the scanners helped authorities identify more than 100 drug carriers last year, leading to the seizure of about 410 kilograms (904 pounds) of cocaine, among other illicit drugs.

Authorities have found drugs sandwiched inside the fabric of suitcases, sewn into wigs worn by female passengers, tucked into underwear or hidden in phone chargers and even in a stethoscope, Ofoyeju said.

"The list is endless," he said.

The weekend seizure may even redeem the agency's image after the controversial arrest last year of a popular Nigerian comedian known as Baba Suwe. The agency held him for more than three weeks to monitor his bowel movements after a scanner detected what investigators believed to be drugs ? but no drugs were ever found.

His ordeal turned the comedian's life into a potty-humor joke. The agency was later ordered to pay him $165,000 in damages ? a court decision it is appealing.

The V-22 Osprey's New Belly Gun Rotates 360 Degrees To Fire 3,000 Rounds a Minute [Video]

Though the V-22 Osprey was built to drop troops behind enemy lines, the tilt-rotor aircraft left them dangerously exposed to ground fire. The problem was that the Osprey couldn't fire a weapon anywhere but to toward the rear. The solution—mount a rotating gun on the aircraft's underside and clear those landing zones in all directions. Radius Mailers: How to Use Them to Grow Your Business | Business ...

hvac marketing ideasRadius mailers can seem old-fashioned in a world of mobile apps, customer service avatars, and social media, but make no mistake: for many local businesses, they can be just as effective, if not more so, than the latest digital marketing techniques.

What Are Radius Mailers?

Radius mailers refer to mailing campaigns that target the neighborhood around which a company?s customer(s) is/are based. So, for example, if you perform maintenance work on a customer?s unit at 123 Main Street, you might want to launch a radius mailing campaign to that customer?s neighbors within a certain radius.

Radius mailers may consist of door hangers, postcards, or even refrigerator magnets. You?ve probably seen door hangers promoting roofing or windshield replacement companies pop up in your own neighborhood following a major storm. They?re also often used by landscapers, general handymen, electricians, and yes, HVAC installers and dealers.

How Do I Use Them?

It?s very simple to create and launch a radius mailing campaign. First, determine the neighborhood you want to target. Business Direct Marketing provides a full radius mailing service that includes mailing lists of households based on a given zip code, making it even easier to start a campaign.

Next, select the mailing or promotional piece you want to use. This may depend on your own personal preferences, budget, any possible restrictions imposed by homeowners? associations and gated communities. Postcard mailers are popular and often get great responses, but three-dimensional mailers and magnet mailers are also big hits and are often kept year-round by their recipients.

Once you?ve selected the type of mailer, create an eye-catching design and promotional copy. Make sure that any graphics don?t overwhelm your calls to action, although a beautiful, professionally shot and unique graphic can do the work of an entire paragraph. Don?t forget to include your telephone number, website URL, address, and license number (if applicable). If you?re running a special ? and you should, especially if you?re targeting a customer?s neighbors ? say so in the mailer. Don?t stuff the mailer with too much copy or too busy a design, or your message will get lost and tossed. Say enough to let the recipient know what you do, how you?re different from the competition, and how to contact you.

The Digital Undivide in Radius Mailing

If you?re wondering if radius mailing campaigns can work in conjunction with a digital marketing campaign, you?re in luck. There are many options now to utilize the power of mobile and web marketing to spread the word about your business. Personalized URLs (PURLs), QR codes, microsites, and social media, are all popular ways to expand a traditional radius mailing campaign?s reach. Include a QR code on a postcard mailer that, when scanned, will take the recipient to a specially-created website on their smartphone that might include a customized special, instructional video, coupon, or website.

Watch Your Business Grow

Marketing a small business can be one of the biggest challenges of entrepreneurs and business owners, but it doesn?t have to be. Marketing is really all about getting the word out about your company, what you do, and where you do it. Rinse and repeat, as they say. Radius direct mailers can be a cost-efficient and effective way to do just that, and many tools are now available to make it even easier for a campaign to be launched in a very short period of time.

If you would like to try a radius direct mail campaign, check out our BDMToolbox, a suite of tools and templates to help you get started. Japan demands investigation into attack on ambassador's car in China

The attack by a group of men in Beijing came as nationalist sentiment deepens in both China and Japan over ownership of islands in the South China Sea.

By Peter Ford,?Staff writer / August 28, 2012

Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba speaks to journalists at his office in Tokyo, Tuesday, Aug. 28. Gemba on Tuesday demanded an investigation into an incident in which a man in Beijing ripped the Japanese flag off of a car carrying the country's ambassador to China.

Beijing apologized for the embarrassing incident on Monday, in which an unidentified man ripped the Japanese flag from the ambassador?s car amid rising tensions over disputed islands in the East China Sea.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said the government was undertaking a ?serious investigation? and would guarantee foreign diplomats? safety. That did not stop Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba from formally demanding an investigation on Tuesday, calling the incident ?deplorable.?

Thousands of anti-Japanese protesters took to the streets of cities across China last weekend for the second straight week, burning Japanese flags and vandalizing Japanese restaurants and businesses.

The violence is the latest flare-up of a long-simmering row between Beijing and Tokyo over ownership of a handful of uninhabited rocky islands known here as the Diaoyu and in Japan as the Senkaku islands. The islands are surrounded by fishing grounds, and sovereignty would confer rights over nearby undersea oil and gas deposits.

The most recent war of words broke out between the two Asian neighbors a month ago, when Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda appeared to suggest that his government might seek to buy the islands from their private Japanese owner, an idea championed by maverick Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara.

That prompted a sharp response from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, who expressed Beijing?s ?strong displeasure? with what he called Mr. Noda?s ?highly irresponsible? remarks.

Tensions rose further when a group of Chinese activists from Hong Kong landed on one of the disputed islands on Aug.15, the 67th ?anniversary of Japan?s surrender at the end of World War II.

After they had been arrested by the Japanese coast guard and expelled from Japan, a group of right wing Japanese activists landed on another of the islands to make their own point for a couple of hours, before coast guard officials persuaded them to leave.

Nationalist and anti-Japanese sentiment is strong in China, where the authorities have long encouraged it in their citizens from an early age through history books that often inflame resentment against the former invaders.

The Chinese government faces a delicate task, however, not wanting to appear soft on Japan yet anxious to keep protests from turning into expressions of dissatisfaction with the Chinese authorities themselves, or from spilling over into violence that might seriously harm relations with Tokyo.

The Japanese authorities too appear anxious not to let the dispute get out of hand. The government yesterday refused a request from the Tokyo municipality for permission to land a delegation on the islands.

(AP) ? Designer Oscar de la Renta may be a celebrity favorite, but the feeling isn't mutual when it comes to stars and athletes who want to delve into fashion design.

"Today you can hit a good tennis ball and be a fashion designer," said de le Renta in an interview Wednesday. "Today you can be a movie star and if your last movie didn't do too well, you become a fashion designer. But you know it's craft that you learn. It's craft of passion."

De la Renta's celebrity pals, including Martha Stewart, Barbara Walters and Sarah Jessica Parker, were on hand to show their support Wednesday as The Fashion Institute of Technology presented him with the 2012 Couture Council Award for Artistry.

"It's interesting to me that he dresses the possible first lady, Mrs. Romney. He dresses Hilary Clinton. He is bipartisan, non-denominational, just wonderful clothes," said Walters before finding her seat at de la Renta's table for the afternoon soiree at Lincoln Center.

Ann Romney, wife of the Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, donned a bold red Oscar de la Renta dress last week during her speech at the Republican National Convention.

Designer Diane von Furstenberg and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour also sat with de la Renta during the presentation, which included a speech from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Despite the pomp and circumstance, de la Renta's focus was elsewhere ? on his next collection headed down the runway Tuesday during New York Fashion Week.

"This is what I call in the business 'panic time.' If I tell you what the collection is going to look like now I don't know. I will know once the girls start walking the runway," he said.

So does the 80-year-old, who also recently launched a children's collection, have any plans of slowing down?

"Not now," he said. "Every single day is a learning process. And I think that to be a good fashion designer, it's not what I did. It's what I'm doing. You know, it's about now."
