Billiards Tips: Master The Creative Shot

By: Akaash Prasad

Regardless of how long you have been playing the sport, there is always room for improvement when it comes to bringing your A-Game to the pool table. While it is true that your ability to master the game depends on the quality of your pool cues, it is also essential that you take the time to truly practice and master both basic and creative shots. You don't have to be a mathematician to perfect the art of creating angles for the perfect shot.
The Break Shot
You can never practice your break shot enough, as this important play should accomplish three key things: scatter the billiard balls, sink at least one ball, and keep the cue ball at the table's center. A little creative thinking and practice will ensure that you accomplish all three and get the upper hand.
Using different pool cues (specifically, a break cue) is smart here, as a break cue sick is lighter, allowing for more speed and control. You must also ensure that the rack is tightened, and move your bridge distance further back from the cue ball; this helps boost acceleration. You may also consider breaking from the rail due to the fact that the angle of approach will be more conducive to pocketing balls.
Rail Shots
For those with a fear of rail shots, it is imperative that you master the skill through practice. Try lining up all balls so that they are positioned frozen along the rail, bordering the entire table. Now try to sink all of the balls in corner pockets without using combinations. This will boost your confidence and teach you what to expect when you approach the ball from different angles.
Practice Drills
One simple way to sharpen your skills while gaining a better understanding of the mechanics of where your billiard balls will go when hit from certain angles and speeds is to drill yourself on shot making. Line up five balls on one side of the pool table with the cue ball at a forty-five degree angle to the innermost ball (this creates a perfect shot to the opposite corner pocket). Shoot the five balls in order. Each time you miss, place the ball back where it was and make note of your speed, angle of approach, and where the ball went.
Now break open those pool cue cases and start practicing so you can get to master your shots!

Why Are Gold, Silver Mining Share Prices Not Moving Higher ...

Julian Phillips

http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/08.12/miningshares.html

?The prime reason that institutional investors and wealthy retail investors are buying gold and silver mining shares now is that these will produce a greater total return than the gold and silver prices themselves.?

This is perhaps one of the most asked questions among gold investors today. But the answer is not a simple one. It goes to the basics of which people invest in gold in the first place and what form of gold they buy. In this, the first of a two part article, we delve deeper into this subject.

Who Buys Gold?

U.S. Demand

It?s so easy to become short-sighted in the different facets of the gold market. In the U.S., it?s easy to believe that gold price rises seen since 2005 are due to either the economic outlook of the U.S. or the strength and weakness of the USD. There?s no doubt that in the short term, gold price movements are driven by traders focused on the exchange rate between the dollar and the euro. But what gold are they buying?

The sophisticated trading operations and tools available in the developed world are able to discount such price moves quickly and dramatically, seemingly providing such gold and silver price dominance. Looked at on a day-to-day basis, the evidence of such dominance is overwhelming. The volumes of gold bought and sold daily are enormous. But are they buying the sort of gold that moves the gold price?
Traders on COMEX buy and sell derivatives in the form of Options and Futures contracts. This is not physical gold. Indeed COMEX officials informed us that only 5% of the volumes traded involve an actual transfer of physical gold.

While the SPDR gold Exchange Traded Fund holds in HSBC vaults more than 1,500 tonnes, only a few tonnes, on average, move each week, reducing the price impact of these investors considerably.

Institutions that do buy gold, allocate an amount to be invested in the gold sector. This amount has as its underlying motive to create profits from these investments. Under the usual risk-reward concept, with the objective of maximum total return, institutions will spread this allocation to the different aspects of the gold market. At times they may feel that the bullion price will produce the most short-term profits, so invest directly in physical gold, perhaps counter-balancing these positions with futures and options which adding a portion of trading to the portfolio. Long-term positions may well be taken in gold mining company shares, provided the higher returns justify the higher risk ? this includes the corporate risk and risk of higher costs of production cutting back potential profits. But it?s normal to spread the risk of gold shares with a physical gold position. The net result is that institutions may well hold only a 30 to 50% position in physical gold [of the amount allocated to gold investments], with the intention of holding these for the long-term. The result is that when one adds the buying and selling of all the gold instruments together over time and weighs them against the volume of physical gold buying and selling over time, the weight of short-term trading in its various forms, heavily outweighs that of physical gold buying, perhaps 10 to 1. Surprisingly this makes U.S. physical gold activity a tiny proportion of total gold-related investment and trading activity. After all, to the U.S. investor making a dollar profit from their gold dealings and not holding it for the long term, is the thrust of their activity. Gold bullion holding for the long-term is not their primary interest.

Overall, the U.S. accounts for +7% of world gold physical demand only, primarily for the jewelry sector. If it was not for the sophistication of its markets and measured on physical demand alone, the U.S. demand is insufficient to dominate the gold price. But the sheer volume of activity in the short-term does dominate the short-term price, but not the long-term price.

Of this total demand for gold in its various forms, what portion goes into gold mining shares? It is very small.

After the arrival of gold Exchange Traded Funds in the market even this amount was reduced considerably because, for the first time institutions could take positions that would affect the gold price itself as the buying of gold ETF shares caused a purchase of physical gold to happen. Gold share buying had zero affect on the gold price itself.

So the amount usually spent on gold shares dropped dramatically!

Emerging World Demand

Between 65% and 75% of the world?s demand for physical gold comes from the emerging world. One hundred per cent of this is for long-term financial security. Even recycled gold is sold with the intention of rebuying again either when the price is lower or when investors are able to afford to buy again. This applies both in China and in India. The investment attitude behind such buying is for the purpose of financial security.

It is both rare and insignificant for investors in the emerging world to buy gold mining shares or Futures & Options or the shares of gold Exchange Traded Funds. The emerging world sees these as speculative instruments related to gold and not gold itself. They are not interested in investing outside their world, usually.

The profit motive is virtually absent from these investors? minds. But when the money volumes spent by these investors is set against the money volumes of the developed world investors in gold instruments, it is tiny because they buy usually once for the long-term and rarely sell. But their demand is insistent and persistent over time. This is why their impact on the long-term gold price is so significant.

However, as to the shares of gold mining companies, the bulk of investors in the emerging world have little, to zero, money invested in them.

Central Bank Demand

The pattern of behavior of central banks is similar to that of the emerging world. They buy only gold bullion for the long-term and are not particularly interested in the price of gold itself only the number of ounces they hold. They have zero interest in buying the shares of gold mining companies.

Silver Prices and silver mining company shares

We?ve followed the silver price for some considerable time and seen that the silver price moves with the gold price, more on the rise and more on the fall, but they move together because they?re treated as a long-term investment that counters the falling value of currencies as a whole. We have no reason to see why this well established pattern change. Therefore it?s reasonable that we should talk about gold and silver shares together, in the context of this article.

Who Buys Gold and Silver Shares?

Apart from a small number of cosmopolitan investors in the emerging world, only investors in the sophisticated markets of the developed world invest in the shares of gold and silver mining companies. It?s quite sobering to realize this.

In the emerging world, the reasons for buying relate as much to ownership of those companies as to sound long-term investments. It is not part of their investment culture to try to profit from the gearing gold and silver mining company shares can offer.

The culture of short-term trading in the emerging world is related more to gambling than to wise investment trading and has not taken hold to nearly the same extent as it has in the developed world.

Institutional investors and the wealthy retail investor are among the buyers of gold and silver mining company shares. The criteria they use is only partially related to the price of gold and silver. The prime reason for them buying gold & silver mining shares now is that these will produce a greater total return than the gold and silver prices themselves. Why else would they take on the added risk that comes with these corporate investments?

Equities Have Added Risks & Costs

It is easy to assume that gold and silver mining shares will move with the gold and silver prices, but they haven?t. They have underperformed precious metal prices by a wide margin over the last few years.

We will go into more detail on why this is so in the next article we produce on the subject, but suffice it to say now that mining company shares come with a lot more baggage than just prices that dominate the performance of the companies.

Egypt president needs greater 'dose of reality ... - Morocco World News

BEIRUT, Sept 2, 2012 (AFP)

Egypt?s president is too new in his post and?doesn?t fully understand Syrian politics, a Damascus official said Sunday,?after Mohamed Morsi publicly sided with those opposed to President Bashar
al-Assad.

?We heard the words of President Morsi. If I may say so, it was a?disappointment,? Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi told?Lebanon?s ?pro-Damascus television channel NBN.

?I think the new Egyptian presidency is not fully developed yet. In my?personal view, his dose of reality will increase with the passing of time. We?hope that he will be able to reach an understanding of the whole truth of what?is happening in Syria, and to take a position at that level.

? ?In a speech to the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran last?Thursday, Morsi denounced the ?oppressive regime? in Damascus, which he said?had lost all legitimacy.

?Our solidarity with the struggle of Syrians against an oppressive regime?that has lost its legitimacy is an ethical duty, and a political and strategic?necessity,? he said.

That comment prompted the Syrian delegation at the summit to walk out, and?embarrassed Iran which fully supports Damascus.

Makdissi said Morsi?s comments stemmed from his background in Egypt?s?Muslim Brotherhood movement, which is affiliated with one of Syria?s main?opposition groups.

?As for President Morsi, we all know that he has a Muslim Brotherhood?background,? Makdissi told NBN.

?But he is now president of a crucial Arab country, Egypt. Now, despite his?Brotherhood background, he now has a relationship with important institutions?in Egypt, such as the ministry of foreign affairs,? he added.

?Syria hopes that Egypt recovers its natural role in the Arab world.?

Pirate Bay co-founder detained in Cambodia

6 hrs.

The co-founder of a controversial file-sharing website,?Pirate Bay's Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, has been detained in Cambodia after skipping out on a one-year prison sentence in Sweden, according to reports from Phnom Penh.

Svartholm?Warg was among four administrators of The Pirate Bay who were convicted in Swedish court in 2009 on charges of contributory copyright infringement.

The Pirate Bay was one of the world's highest-profile file-sharing sites, pointing millions of users to material elsewhere on the Web that in many cases was illegally pirated.

Svartholm?Warg and his fellow defendants argued that the website did not host pirated material itself, but merely helped users find BitTorrent files via a peer-to-peer network. The court didn't buy the argument. In addition to the jail terms, the four were ordered to pay millions of dollars in damages to entertainment companies including Sony Music Entertainment,?Warner Bros, EMI and Columbia Pictures.

The three other?defendants in the case -- including co-founders Peter Sunde and Fredrik Neij as well as financier Carl Lundstr?m -- had their one-year prison sentences reduced to terms of?four to 10 months during appeal. Svartholm?Warg, however,?didn't attend the appeal hearing, ostensibly due to illness. The Swedish government upheld his sentence, and when he failed to show up to serve the prison term, an international warrant was issued?for his arrest.

It was well-known in that Svartholm?Warg had sought refuge in Cambodia, and reports spread over the weekend that Cambodian?police had finally taken him into custody. The TorrentFreak website said he was arrested in an apartment over the Cadillac Bar and Grill, a popular hangout for expatriates in Phnom Penh.

One of Svartholm Warg's co-defendants, Peter Sunde, confirmed the report: ?"Gottfrid ... is in custody in Cambodia," he said in a Twitter update. "He's apparently OK. No more info available."

Cambodia's national police acknowledged to the AFP news service that Svartholm Warg was detained.

"His arrest was made at the request of the Swedish government for a crime related to information technology," police spokesman Kirth Chantharith told AFP today.?"We don't have an extradition treaty with Sweden, but we'll look into our laws and see how we can handle this case."

In a follow-up report, TorrentFreak suggested that Svartholm Warg had run into trouble with associates in Phnom Penh, and that he was likely to be sent back to Sweden. ?

Science editor?Alan Boyle is more comfortable writing about rockets and dinosaurs than file-sharing fugitives, but he's taking this one for the Tech/Science team. He hangs out at Cosmic Log and the usual places ... Facebook, Twitter, Google+?... but not the Cadillac?Bar and Grill.

Meles Zenawi enters history lionised as Ethiopian hero ...

Ethiopia has had a long line of leaders dying in secret, hidden behind closed doors, but not a long history of funerals.

In 1913, one of Ethiopia?s most renowned emperors, Menelik II, died. His death remained a secret until 1916 when officials finally announced that he had succumbed to a stroke years earlier. Haile Selassie, Ethiopia?s last emperor, officially died of natural causes in 1975, but is widely believed to have been murdered by the brutal regime of Mengistu Hailemariam, suffocated and buried under a toilet.

Last month, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi died of an unknown illness after a mysterious, two month-long disappearance from public view, and will be buried on Sunday in the first state funeral for a leader in over 80 years. The cloud of secrecy and gossip that has surrounded the deaths of several Ethiopian leaders stems from a desire to ensure a stable succession, according to analysts.

?If the death is announced there is the fear that it can provoke a lot of trouble because different people can ask for the throne,? said Estelle Sohier from the University of Geneva, author of a book on Menelik. ?To hide a death of a leader is a way to spare time, to save time, to settle the succession,? added Sohier.

Though Meles? death was announced hours after he died in a Brussels hospital, the secrecy surrounding his illness led some to question whether the government was getting its house in order to ensure a smooth transition.

Days after Meles died, the government confirmed that deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn will take over power until national elections in 2015. Author Michela Wrong said this pattern of secrecy is common following the sudden deaths of leaders throughout Africa, not only in Ethiopia.

?The ruling elite is motivated by the desire to maintain the status quo, from which it benefits. It wants stability,? she said. Sohier draws parallels between the death of Menelik whose successor was disputed among the royal family, and the death of Meles, whose clear successor was not known until the government confirmed Hailemariam?s takeover.

??????????????????????????????????????

Ethiopia?s constitution states the deputy will take over in the absence of the prime minister, but does not specify what happens in the case of the leader?s death. Meles will be given a state funeral on Sunday, the first offered to a reigning head of state since the death of Empress Zawditu in 1930.

?This is the first time for 82 years that Ethiopians have had an opportunity to show what they think about their ruler,? said Patrick Gilkes, an Ethiopia-based historian and author of ?The Dying Lion,? which examines feudalism in Ethiopia.

The gesture solidifies his memory in national history, pointing also to the fact that Ethiopians have not had a chance to mourn the loss of a leader in nearly a century following a series of rocky regime changes, observers say. No public mourning was staged after Haile Selassie?s death while Mengistu, who was deposed by Meles in 1991, is still alive in exile in Zimbabwe.

Immediately after Haile Selassie died, many people in Addis were ?very sad? said Ethiopian journalist Tsegaye Tadesse, 78, who was in Addis Ababa at the time, but Mengistu?s regime did not permit a public funeral. ?There was an outpouring of grief, yes, but it was limited,? he said.

Haile Selassie?s remains were exhumed in 1992 and a public funeral was held though the government did not hold a state funeral for the late emperor, who was buried in Addis Ababa?s Trinity Cathedral, where Meles too will be buried.

The decision to bury the former Marxist leader in the same cathedral as Haile Selassie, deceased patriarchs of Ethiopia?s Orthodox Church and war martyrs, suggests that authorities want Meles remembered as a national hero.

?Eulogising late leaders, while glossing over their very obvious faults, is something you see across the world,? Wrong added. ?The leaders who were being vilified up until a moment ago suddenly take on a new, golden aura.? Meles, while credited with widespread economic growth was also chided by critics for his human rights record.

But Tsegaye said Meles deserves a place in history among Ethiopia?s finest for the development he brought to Ethiopia.???????????? ?We have got top leaders like Menelik II, Haile Selassie, but Meles, he is in my opinion even better than the others,? he said.

Home Maintenance Series ? Is Your House Sinking? Drought could ...

There has been a lot in the new lately about the ongoing drought and the impact it is having on the crops and livestock. Did you know it also has an affect on your home?? Lisa Kaplan Gordon is a HouseLogic contributor and builder of luxury homes in McLean, Va. She?s been a Homes editor for Gannett News Service and has reviewed home improvement products for AOL. Here is some great information from her about the impact the drought may be having on your home.
Prolonged drought pits house foundations against deep-rooted trees in a war for water.

You?re probably thinking, ?Hey, I?m supposed to keep water away from my foundation, so what gives? Why shouldn?t my trees soak up what water there is??

Yes, you want to keep water from pooling around your foundation ? that?s where your gutters, your downspouts, and properly graded soil comes in ? but moist soil actually helps keep homes from settling unevenly, which can lead to cracks in foundations, facades, and walls.

During dry spells, when mature trees and shrubs grab scant moisture, soils shrink and foundations may settle. This can be particularly problematic in areas like the Ohio Valley westward, where homes rest on on ?fat clay? ? soil that greatly expands and contracts depending on moisture.

If a foundation settles evenly, damage is nil or minimal. But typically moisture levels, sunlight, and landscaping differ on each side of a house, causing soil to dry out and the house to settle unevenly, called ?differential settlement.?

?That?s when you start to see cracks,? says Tom Scott, a structural engineer in Texas.

Signs your foundation is settling unevenly

  • Cracks in brick, drywall, tile, and stucco.

Floors slope gradually and are sometimes hard to notice. Use the marble test: Drop a few marbles on the floor and see where and how quickly they roll to the wall: The faster they roll, the greater the slope.

Settlement prevention

The best way to prevent your home from sinking during drought is to keep the soil around your home well hydrated.

  • Dig down about 6 inches; if the soil is bone dry, it needs water.
  • Run a soaker hose around the house about a foot away from the foundation, and let it water the soil until it?s moist ? not drenched. That should give nearby drought-stricken trees a drink and keep the soil from contracting.

If you can, a preventative strategy is to plant or transplant trees away from your foundation so roots won?t compete with your house for water during dry spells. Roots extend to edge of the tree?s leaf canopy; so if the branches touch the house, the tree?s too close.

Professional help

If you notice cracks, sloping floors, and sticky interior doors, you should call a professional.

  • A structural engineer will inspect your foundation and give you a report for $300-$800.
