12-year-old girl who blogged cancer fight has died (AP)

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif. ? A Southern California girl who became a nationally recognized face of child cancer with a blog that chronicled her fight against brain tumors has died. Jessica Joy Rees was 12 years old.

Jessica's family announced her death on her Facebook page, stating that her 10-month battle with brain cancer ended Thursday. Tens of thousands of people responded by posting updates to the page in a show of support that includes "likes" and prayers.

By Friday afternoon the outpouring surpassed Jessica's goal to get one "like" for each of the estimated 50,000 American children with cancer.

The Orange County seventh-grader, called "Jessie" by family and friends, began her blog and Facebook page after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in March. A second tumor was discovered in September.

While some of her posts discussed her struggles as she underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments, others urged readers in dozens of countries to support pediatric cancer research and to pray for other children with the illness.

She always signed her posts with the acronym "NEGU" (NEE'-goo), short for "never ever give up."

Also, she and her parents started The NEGU Foundation, a nonprofit organization to raise awareness of pediatric cancer, support sufferers and raise money for research.

The foundation sold and provided thousands of "JoyJars" stuffed with candy and toys to sick children. More than 3,000 were sold and distributed in 27 states last year, according to the NEGU website.

After her diagnosis, Rancho Santa Margarita youngster received tickets to "American Idol" and arrived with signs that read "NEGU Casey" to support contestant Casey Abrams, the Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/yJwyF3) reported.

Co-host Ryan Seacrest also allowed her to announce country singer, and eventual winner, Scott McCreery.

Jessica wrote on Facebook that her mission was "to encourage kids fighting cancer to Never Ever Give Up by spreading hope, joy and love. A cheerful heart is great medicine."

A celebration service was scheduled for Wednesday at the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, where her father, Erik Rees, is a pastor.

Saudi Teen Hacker Steals Thousands of Israeli Credit Cards ? Says His Parents Like It ?Update: Israel Says They Will Respond in Same Way As They Do to Terror Attacks

Gawker chatted with teen Saudi hacker ?oxOmar? who says he stole a million Israeli credit cards from several websites. The Saudi hacker says his parents know about it and support him since the victims were Jews.

You said in a press release that you have hacked ?much more than you can imagine.? What else do you have?
I have entire Israeli population database even dead people. I have documents of Israeli companies who build jammers and military survellance. I have their customers and their emails. There technical documents. Half million more credit cards. And much more

Can you show me any of the unpublished documents as proof?

hmmm prefer to not share now. I?ll leak when media forgot me. I?ll start leaking to re-get media. I?ll publish them one by one. I?ll be in media for at least 2 month

Why do you want to be in the media?
make Israeli people afraid and be in panic. I want to be their horror. Their nightmare?

?Do you live at home?
Yes, where should I live? street? hahahaha

I meant with your parents.
yes

Do they have any idea what you?re doing?
approximately, but they are not aware of details, just they know I?m hurting Israel

And what do they think about it?
They like it and support me.

YNet reported on the hacker attack:

Hackers break into ?ONE? website, post link to file containing personal addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers of thousands of Israelis. Most Israelis on list say personal information accurate, but credit card details false. One of them says ?what if the banks? websites are also broken into??

Saudi hackers who identified themselves as members of the online Anonymous network claimed on Monday to have leaked files containing personal information, including credit card numbers and expiration dates, belonging to more than 400,000 Israelis.

They called on surfers to use the details in order to purchase goods online. ?It will be so fun to see 400,000 Israelis stand in line outside banks and offices of credit card companies to complain that their cards had been stolen. To see banks shred 400,000 cards and reissue them. To see that Israeli cards are not accepted around the world, like the Nigerian cards,? the hackers wrote.

Hat Tip Founding Bloggers UPDATE: Israel today said they would respond to the Saudi hackers the ?same way? do to any terror threats.
Inquisitr reported:

Israel said that they ?will respond to cyber-attacks in the same way it responds to violent ?terrorist? acts, by striking back with force against hackers who threaten the Jewish state.?

Hacking continues to be a problem for countries and companies with various movements such as Anonymous and also hackers focused on exposing information for personal financial gain, such as what happened with the over 400,000 credit card details.

The good part is that despite the leak of such information, Israel?s three largest credit card companies reported only 6,050 of the 11,000 exposed being affected and just 14,000 of the 400,000 had been exposed.

GOP Debate Reactions

Mike Flynn, Editor Big Government:

Little known fact; during the last GOP debate in Iowa, the RNC held their holiday party at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in DC. There weren?t any TVs among the open bars. So, no one at the RNC was actually watching the debate among candidates vying to be the standard-bearer of the party. Perhaps the RNC has throw parties during all of these debates. How else to explain its continuing acquiescence in letting the legacy media pay inquisitors to its nominees? The GOP field actually did well combatting some of silliness from Diane Sawyer, Snuffleupagas and some guy we?ll never hear from again. But, the American public was short-changed in getting 1 hour and 41 minutes (!) of chatter on issues that almost no one outside of the hard left cares about. (2 questions on the economy?kinda?) Et tu RNC?

The obvious big winner of the night was Mitt Romney. Inexplicably, he largely escaped criticism from his fellow nominees. Weirder still, as Romney is vulnerable to at least 25 attacks from the right, is the fact that Newt, et al decided to attack him from the left. Being in the same room as Snuffleupagas will do that to you I guess.

The other big winner was Ron Paul. One would have thought he were the front-runner given the attention he received from the moderator and other nominees. Santorum, inexplicably finding himself in the big leagues, reverted to form and acted like a candidate who is simply trying to get attention. His initial statement that America doesn?t need a CEO or manager, but a leader is frankly baffling. I think it speaks to a personal insecurity that he has virtually no private sector experience and no executive experience. Making awesome speeches on the House or Senate floor is not a leader. He was like a player called up to the majors who whiffed at every at-bat. Santomentum is fading.

Newt seemed neutered. He did a great professorial turn at times and reminded me how great he is in this medium, but he need to draw distinctions. He didn?t.

Perry did well, but he was mostly irrelevant tonight. He started with a great theme about Washington insiders, but pulled his punches in the end. He didn?t screw up, but he needs to quickly put points on the board.

Huntsman spoke Chinese.

Whatever happens in November, whomever at the RNC approved these debate formats needs to find a new line of work.

Alex Marlow, Managing Editor, Breitbart.com:

Fitting for a Saturday night, the tenor of the New Hampshire debate was decidedly business casual. The remaining Republican presidential candidates intermittently discussed some of the most important issues of the day between answering questions on the constitutionality of contraception and whether or not they believe it?s the government?s job to ?invest? more in ?infrastructure? (presumably so we can get more of those American Recovery and Reinvestment Act road signs). George Snuffleupagus was an utter embarrassment as a moderator; his gotcha line of questioning was as ineffectual as it was transparent. I don?t hold it against him, though; after all, he is a Clintonista. The blame lies squarely with ABC, who thought he was an appropriate moderator for a GOP primary debate. Diane Sawyer wasn?t exactly professional either, giggling like a school-girl getting her tootsies tickled throughout much of the night. Yep, it was the MSM vs. the GOP again, and I?m happy to say the GOP won this round handily.

Regarding the candidates, we?re officially at the point in the campaign where if Romney doesn?t obviously lose, he?s the winner by default. He was steady as usual and no one landed a clean blow to him. Mitt?s take-down of Snuffy over the bizarre contraception question was the highlight of the night. Newt was also impressive, particularly when he drew attention to bigotry against Christians. Curiously, Rick Perry said he?d send troops back to Iraq and Santorum wasn?t able to capitalize on his Iowa momentum. Towards the end of the festivities, we were finally reminded that Jon Huntsman was a member of the Obama administration, just before the Mongolian Candidate broke into Chinese to order some Szechuan Shrimp (I think?).

Joel Pollak, Editor Breitbart.com:

This was one of the best debates for the Republican field, because the candidates finally defeated their media inquisitors (they?re not ?moderators? when they demand the Republicans meet left-wing standards). Gov. Mitt Romney absolutely squashed George Stephanopoulos?s attempt to use a bizarre question about contraceptives to cast him and the rest of the candidates as religious extremists. Speaker Newt Gingrich stood up to Diane Sawyer on the issue of gay marriage by challenging the anti-Christian bigotry of the left and the mainstream media. Sen. Rick Santorum challenged the premise of the term ?middle class,? insisting that the United States is not a class-based society. It was amusing to watch the post-debate analysis on ABC as the journalists described their dismay that the candidates didn?t do more to attack each other, and to attack Romney in particular. There were a few attacks?Santorum did very well defending his record in response to Rep. Ron Paul?but the candidates have learned that Republican voters will not reward them for playing to the mainstream media?s tune. They know (most of them, anyway) that the main target is Barack Obama, and the candidate that wins will be the one that shows the strongest, most effective contrast to the president.

2012: The year Microsoft finally battles back (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? In the constant game of thrones that is the Silicon Valley tech giants' battle for dominance, 2012 could be the year that Microsoft comes back from exile.

Having lost its beat about a decade ago, the software giant has more recently been plotting an aggressive grab for territory. And it's getting back in the game with actual innovation.

Flush with capital from its steady core businesses of software and servers, the company has been quietly busy with research and development in recent months and years.

The results are showing.

* Windows 8, expected to come out in February in beta, is meant to operate at the heart of a Microsoft-wide ecosystem, one that bids to challenge Apple's intuitive array of linked devices and functions. In introducing 8 at a developer's conference in Anaheim in September, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was expansive, promising, "If Windows 8 is Windows re-imagined, we're also in the process of re-imagining Microsoft."

* The X Box 360's upgrade, via an improved dashboard and the Kinect add-on, is ahead of the pack as a user-friendly voice- and gesture-controlled device and stoking enthusiasm not only among the early adopters and tech geek websites but on Wall Street. With its inviting user interface, it set a record for Black Friday weekend console sales.

Demand was so great that the national Black Friday X Box stampede, in which 800,000 units were sold, included what may be the first single-person-shooter shopping brawl, in which a Los Angeles woman pepper-sprayed the competition in a frenzy over half-price X Box 360s at a Walmart.

"The X Box is optimized for television and already connected to 50 million TV sets," says influential tech consultant and former head of digital for Oprah's network Robert Tercek. "If they can get everybody to sign up for their service (no mean feat with an upfront $60 fee to join X Box Gold and monthly charges for access to some channels), they could be as big a player as Netflix."

* Nor is the company shrinking from a battle for mobile phone -- and tablet -- business now dominated by Apple and Google's Android. The Lumia, which has been out in Europe in the form of the 710 and a fancier 800 model (introduced in London November 30 with Deadmaus deejaying), will be available January 11 in the U.S. at $49.99 with a two-year plan and is aimed at first-time buyers. (Upgraded versions are said to be on the way this spring.)

It's the first phone since the introduction of the iPhone to give Tercek gadget lust. "Have you seen the phone?" he asked TheWrap, pointing to the OLED screen that's easily read in sunlight and the tactile response of the touch screen compared to the iPhone's hard glass and the operating system. "It's a wonder to behold -- a terrific comeback."

Currently the Lumia runs on Windows Phone, but like the rest of the Microsoft offerings to come, it likely will move to the Windows 8 format.

"I've talked to people who are on the inside as developers and designers of the phone and they're pretty excited," Fred Hickey, who writes the widely read newsletter High Tech Strategist, told TheWrap. "So even people who were skeptical about Microsoft in the past are excited about these new offerings."

And if a report of a leaked internal document is correct, the company is planning to stack the deck for Lumia, combining with its phone partners what's described as a $200 million "marketing tsunami" in the U.S. alone for Lumia.

Finally, reinforcing the sense of company's refreshed zeal to compete in the phone arena, a Wall Street Journal report cited secret talks that Microsoft and Nokia were holding to acquire struggling competitor and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion.

* Even the search business that some thought Microsoft had largely ceded to Google is beginning to look more robust. Partly thanks to a useful partnership with Facebook and partly to a mandate to give customers more practical -- and fewer unfiltered -- results, its Bing has been growing in market share, mostly at the expense of Yahoo, in some part thanks to a re-energized ad campaign. (Though a Sunday New York Times piece on Google's new ad campaign for search noted, "An added incentive is that Google's main rival, Microsoft's Bing, also has a new ad campaign.")

Indeed, so promising is 2012 for Microsoft that Standard & Poor's equity analyst Angelo Zino has a "Buy" rating on the company, based both on the company's core business and the new initiatives, especially the much revamped new operating system.

"I think Windows 8 is the best thing they've got out there, and it's really going to be critical. It's almost like an 'all-in' kind of approach, and it's one of those things where they've got to get this right, and if they don't they're going to miss the boat on the whole mobile space," Zino told TheWrap.

But it's not just the products. Another change at the company is a more measured approach to going public with its innovations.

Microsoft, a giant presence at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, recently said next week's gathering will be its last, claiming the massive convention's timing is not always in sync with its product announcements.

And until scattered recent announcements focusing on Windows 8 and mobile, the reinvigoration of the company has been mostly behind the scenes. Not surprising, since Microsoft may have been feeling chastened by some past -- and more ballyhooed -- attempts at rejiggering its profile.

Ironically, though it's only three places beneath Apple in the Fortune 500 -- at No. 38, with $62 billion in revenue, thanks mostly to its core software and server businesses -- its steadily strong profits have been overshadowed by the failure of such ancillary products as the Zune MP3 player and the Windows Vista operating system.

The recent acquisition of Skype for a pricey $8.5 billion also drew fire. By the time the Redmond, Wash., giant announced a deal with struggling Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia this past February, "Microsoft had pissed away the previous 10 years in mobile with one humiliating failure after another," Tercek told TheWrap.

"Microsoft Mobile was a joke, the Windows phone was a joke, and they were humiliated," he added. "So when the Nokia deal was announced the general reaction was, 'Great, you tie two stones together, they still can't float.'"

Ballmer has been the focus of much shareholder criticism and was even targeted in May by feared hedge-fund activist David Einhorn, not just for the stolid share price that's long hovered under $30, but for overseeing the company's $2.56 billion loss in their search unit.

No serious observers believed the fantasy solution that founder Bill Gates would step back in. Instead, it was announced last month that Andy Lees, head of the company's Windows Phone division for the past three years, will be moved into a "time-critical" mission to further integrate Windows 8 with mobile devices, in line with what Lees earlier this year described as "a single ecosystem" integrating phones, televisions and tablets.

Indeed, all this intuitive gadgetry, is helping people forget "the Microsoft of yore with the blue screen of death," Tercek told TheWrap. "With all these great user interface advances, they're showing they can continue to innovate."

John Terry, the 'face' of anti-smoking campaign in India

The blurry image featuring the head and shoulders of a man resembling Terry above a warning that "Smoking Kills" was created by the government's Directorate of Visual Publicity, the Indian Express reported.

The newspaper quoted Keith Cousins of Elite Management, Terry's representatives, as saying: "We have reviewed this matter with our client and have today instructed solicitors to take appropriate action."

Terry, 31, who is facing criminal charges over allegations of racially abusing QPR's Anton Ferdinand, has made 72 appearances for England.

K.S. Dhatwalia, additional secretary of the Directorate of Visual Publicity, told the Express it was "not clear" how the image had been used.

"We sent the creative to the health ministry and they then cleared it and circulated it," he said. "But how Terry's picture got to be used is not clear."

Government advertising departments have landed in trouble in the past for using "cut-and-paste" images taken from elsewhere.

In 2010, there was embarrassment about a newspaper advertising campaign featuring India's athletes ahead of the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Pictures of the athletes were set against planes supposedly emitting the orange, white and green national colours in vapour plumes, but the planes were in fact Italian and the smoke Italy's red, white and green.

Kenya military reports battle with Somali fighters

(AP)? NAIROBI, Kenya ? Kenya's military says its forces killed three militant fighters from al-Shabab in a battle in Somalia.

Military spokesman Maj. Emmanuel Chirchir said Wednesday that one Kenyan soldier was also killed in the battle.

Chirchir said that Kenyan and Somali troops are advancing north. Kenyan troops entered Somalia in mid-October to attack al-Shabab militants and have been supported by Somalia's weak army.

Since then Ethiopian troops have entered Somalia on the country's west, who along with African Union troops in Mogadishu are squeezing al-Shabab fighters on three sides.
