Welcome to a New World: On Flexibility, Listening and Trust - Let It Go

Monday morning meditation accompanied by the rain and wind of the impending hurricane Sandy, contemplating whether or not to venture out to my usual Monday morning yoga practice with David Vendetti at South Boston Yoga. "Stay home," Spirit spoke reinforced by a powerful feeling in my gut.

But wait, I have my yoga schedule, my precious routine, my community...I answered. "Stay home and do the treadmill."

I felt calm in my decision. I was not coming from a place of fear or panic but rather one of a common sense New Englander who has weathered many storms. Yes there have been many times I would sit at home with the children on a 'no school' day waiting for the storm to hit and it was a bust feeling frustrated I had to take a day off from work. (That was before 'enlightenment'). I also remember a storm that hit mid day with a vengeance and it took my husband 2 hours to get my kids from the high school to home, normally a 10 minute drive and it took me over 2 hours to get home from work. And then there was the blizzard of '78 when I almost got stranded in Kenmore Square. My gut said stay home and so I did....

For the past year, I have not felt a need to incorporate cardio workouts into my 'exercise' plan. In December I wrote the blog post, "For Now" sharing the 'research' I had done about the cardiovascular benefits of yoga and what I felt my body needed at the time. I shared with you my dear readers how, from the time I was 5, my body was controlled by outside forces so it's taken me a long time to feel comfortable with being flexible in how I care for my body, listen to what my body needs on and off of my yoga mat and trusting in that innate wisdom.

I incoporated a 45 minute power walk on the treadmill into a yoga practice. I started out with some ball rolling

and foam rolling
followed by some cat/cow to loosen up my spine and hips.

I turned on the heater in the basement, brought down our radio and thoroughly enjoyed my 45 minutes on the treadmill. I reflected on how different my body felt from a year ago. I feel lighter, more balanced and feel greater ease and confidence in my body. I listened to what my body needed in terms of pace and time. I felt the heat build and the sweat begin to flow. I did not have a cardiac monitor which I used to be a slave to:

I have different ways to measure the 'benefits' of my practice. After my treadmill time ended, I came upstairs to my yoga mat to restore out and go into savasana.

I had to start somewhere when I began a health and fitness regimen. My first personal trainer focused on weight, heart rate, strength training and cardiovascular exercise. God bless her. She got me moving and to the finish line of the 2009 Boston Marathon. But now I no longer need to rely on that external rigid structure and measurements to assess my health and well being.

I reflected on how different I feel mind, body and Spirit allowing myself to be flexible, listen to what is right for me and trust in the choices that I make letting go of all of those preconceived notions of should and must. I am free and fabulous feeling calm, happy and grateful in the midst of a storm sending out a powerful metta meditation on the winds of Sandy.

Savasana in the Meadow - from Songs of Freedom:Poems From a Healing Odyssey - now available on Amazon

Feisty five year old fighting for her life
deeply ingrained into the fiber of her being.
Struggle to overcome
struggle to allow Divine Love.
Discernment doesn't come easy
resisting the healing touch.
Surrender brings such freedom
easing the pain of transformation.
Tenuous trusting walking gingerly in this new world
unsure of the expansive landscape of love and light.
A knowing deep in the heart of what's right and true
daring to let go and graze in lush pastures.
The Master's Hand painted this magnificent pastoral scene
savasana in the meadow.

From my heart to yours
With total love and deepest gratitude
May all beings be happy, free and safe!
Mary

Hurricane Sandy: With 8.1 million in the dark, utility crews get busy

Hurricane Sandy inflicted most of its damage in heavily populated states including New York and New Jersey. The storm also caused three nuclear power plants to shut down.

By Mark Clayton,?Staff writer / October 30, 2012

A National Grid crew restores electric power to a neighborhood on October 29, in Cumberland, Rhode Island. Hurricane Sandy knocked out power along the east coast in eight states: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, and West Virginia ? some 7.4 million customers.

More than 8.1 million customers in 17 states were left in the dark in the wake of hurricane Sandy, which smashed ashore Monday night in New Jersey and immediately began dismantling chunks of the eastern power grid.

In terms of its outage impact, hurricane Sandy was roughly on a par with hurricane Irene, which in August 2011 knocked out power to more than 9.3 million customers along the East Coast and in Puerto Rico ? about 6 million in 13 East Coast states.

But Sandy's impact was more concentrated than Irene's, doing the bulk of its damage in fewer but more heavily populated states. Most of the outages were in eight states: New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, and West Virginia ? some 7.4 million customers.

"The magnitude of this event is really huge," says Mark Merritt, president of Witt Associates, a public-safety and crisis-management consulting firm in Washington. "From North Carolina to Maine, utilities are dealing with coastal power issues from flooding to snow impacts in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. A lot of these companies, public and private, are competing for limited resources, scrambling, so it's a challenge for everyone."

With crews coming from all over, even the West Coast, hurricane Sandy has become an "an all-hands-on-deck-type event," Mr. Merritt says. Still, there were signs that power restoration could be slow in some of the hardest-hit areas.

Restoration of power in New York, for one, is going to be exceedingly complex, with blown transformers, flooded underground utilities, and waterlogged subways. Repairs may go more slowly than many had hoped, despite the high level of preparation by utility companies.

Excessive flooding from the storm surge knocked out a number of substations in New Jersey?s Essex, Hudson, and Middlesex counties, according to the utility Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G). Those stations, which serve about 462,000 customers, will be out of service until the water recedes and equipment can be cleaned and dried, the utility reported.

Consolidated Edison, a big New York utility, said first reports indicated more than 200 wires down on Staten Island. The company cut service overnight to two sections of lower Manhattan and a chunk of Brooklyn to protect underground delivery systems from floodwaters. The electrical equipment there would then have to have all components cleaned of seawater, dried, and tested.

Meanwhile, three nuclear power plants in the northeastern United States had to shut down, and two units cut back their power output as a result of effects from hurricane Sandy, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission reported.

PSEG Nuclear manually shut down its Salem Unit 1 in southern New Jersey at 1:09 a.m. Monday when four of the station?s six circulating water pumps became unavailable due to weather impacts. Circulating water pumps use Delaware Bay water to condense steam on the nonnuclear side of the plant.

Entergy Nuclear also shut down its Indian Point Unit 3 reactor, 38 miles north of New York City, at 10:45 p.m. on Monday "due to external electrical grid issues," the company reported. About two hours earlier, at 9 p.m., Constellation Energy reported that its Nine Mile Unit 1 near Oswego, N.Y., experienced an automatic reactor shutdown whose cause was being investigated.

Two of six refineries were shut down as of Tuesday morning, with the four others operating at reduced capacity, the Energy Department reported.

At a news conference, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) spoke of homes knocked off foundations and amusement-park rides rammed into the sea. ?The level of devastation on the Jersey Shore is unthinkable,? he said.

Governor Christie, who has indicated a distinct disinterest in the presidential election, nevertheless praised President Obama on his response to, and preparation for, the storm.

"The president has been all over this, he deserves great credit.... He gave me his number at the White House, told me to call if I needed anything, and he absolutely means it,? he said. ?It's been very good working with the president, and his administration has been coordinating with us great."

According to some early estimates from economists, hurricane Sandy, with its massive flooding, is more akin to hurricane Katrina than hurricane Irene. Katrina was the nation?s most expensive natural disaster costing about $41 billion in property damage, according to one insurance company report.

Now the race begins to see how fast electricity can be restored to limit the overall economic damage. Utilities have been under pressure since major power outages from storms last year to do a better job this time. To that end, they have been prepositioned thousands of line crews from out of state. Now politicians and customers will be waiting ? and waiting ? to see how long it takes.

?We expected an unprecedented storm,? New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a press conference Tuesday morning. ?That?s what we got.?

Previous studies touted partial restoration as enough to improve outcomes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Two Rhode Island Hospital researchers recently found that restoring near-complete blood flow to the brain is necessary to restore or preserve neurological function following stroke. Seems like a no-brainer, right?

Yet until their research was complete, many physicians and researchers believed that partial blood-flow restoration was good enough. Not anymore.

The study by Mahesh Jayaraman, M.D., director of interventional neuroradiology, and Brian Silver, M.D., director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Rhode Island Hospital, is published online in advance of print in the American Journal of Neuroradiology.

The researchers found that when performing intra-arterial stroke therapy putting a catheter directly into a blood vessel in the brain in an effort to open it it's simply not enough to open some of the vessels. Rather, opening the vast majority of the vessels is needed to truly restore neurological function in patients with acute ischemic stroke who are ineligible for, or fail to improve following intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), a common treatment for stroke.

"Stroke caused by a large blockage in the brain is potentially debilitating," Jayaraman said. "But if we can successfully restore blood flow to the majority of the blood vessels in the brain, then we may be able to help reduce the severity of a patient's stroke. While previous studies have shown that any restoration of blood flow can help, our results are the first to show that near-complete restoration is needed to help improve patient outcomes, including the preservation of fine and gross motor skills, speech and behavior."

The purpose of the study was to determine whether the degree of restoration of blood flow to the brain has an impact on the degree of brain damage and clinical outcomes. The study found that there are, in fact, significant differences in clinical outcomes between partial and near-complete blood flow restoration following intra-arterial stroke therapy for strokes that occur in the front part of the brain. As a result, Jayaraman and Silver concluded that future patient care plans should focus on restoring as much blood flow as possible, combining new technologies with a health care infrastructure designed to deliver rapid care.

"Rapid treatment is critical for stroke patients," Silver said. "It's not enough to just open blood vessels to the brain; it has to be done as early as possible. At Rhode Island Hospital, more than 50 percent of our patients are treated with intravenous clot busters (tPA) in less than 60 minutes after arrival, and a significant number of stroke patients are being treated with an intra-arterial therapy in less than two hours from the time they arrive. Stroke treatment needs to evolve, and that includes using new technologies that allow physicians to remove the clot in its entirety as quickly as possible."

Stroke is a leading cause of death in the United States; more than 800,000 people in the U.S. die each year from cardiovascular disease and strokes. Sometimes called a "brain attack," stroke occurs when a clot blocks the blood supply to the brain or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. If not treated in a timely manner, stroke can cause death or significant disability, such as paralysis, speech difficulties and emotional problems.

46 dead, millions without power, transit after Sandy

The sweep of devastation from Superstorm Sandy became heartbreakingly clear Tuesday: At least 46 people are dead, and authorities face the unimaginable task of restoring power and transit for millions of others.

"We have not seen damage like this in a generation," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, assessing the scope of a hurricane that swept homes into the ocean, flooded large swaths of coastal areas, left millions of people without power and crippled transportation, told NBC News.

The storm, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, was proof that "nature is an awful lot more powerful than we are."??

President Barack Obama declared major disasters in New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut, promising that the federal government would do all it could to help local authorities cope with damage. The president was scheduled to visit damaged areas in New Jersey on Wednesday, the White House said.

BreakingNews.com's coverage of Sandy

Details of the devastation became clearer late Tuesday after authorities made their way through severely damaged areas across 20 states stretching from New England to Tennessee:

  • Forty-six people had been killed in the U.S., 23 of them in New York ? including 18 in New York City, NBC News reported. Six people had been killed in New Jersey, as well as? five in Pennsylvania; four in Connecticut; two apiece in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia; and one each in North Carolina and Puerto Rico. Before it made its way north, Sandy was blamed for 68 other deaths in the Caribbean.
  • More than 6.6 million homes and businesses were without electricity, about two-thirds of them in New York and New Jersey. That number represents individual structures, including large businesses, meaning the number of people without light, heat or refrigeration is likely much higher.
  • The New York region's airports were closed Tuesday. JFK International and Newark Liberty will open early Wednesday and offer limited service; LaGuardia will remain closed "due to extensive damage," Cuomo said. More than 18,000 flights had been canceled, while Amtrak canceled all of its Northeast Corridor rail service Tuesday, in addition to some other lines.
  • Subway service was unlikely to resume for four to five days, Bloomberg said, but free bus service had resumed on a Saturday schedule, and about 4,000 cabs were running on city streets. PATH train service between Manhattan and New Jersey is likely to be suspended for seven to 10 days, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said.
  • The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the South Ferry subway station was "flooded up to the ceiling," while each tube of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel ? better known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel ? was filled with 43 million gallons of water.
  • At least four towns in north New Jersey were submerged by up to 6 feet of water after a levee broke.
  • A half-dozen nuclear power plants were shut down or otherwise affected, while the nation's oldest facility declared a rare "alert" after the record storm surge pushed flood waters high enough to endanger a key cooling system.
  • Major U.S. stock exchanges were closed Tuesday for a second day, but they planned to reopen Wednesday.

Sandy leaves NYC subway system, infrastructure licking its wounds

Dawn Zimmer, mayor of Hoboken, N.J., said half the city remained flooded Tuesday night.

"We have, probably, about 20,000 people that still remain in their homes, and we're trying to put together an evacuation plan, get the equipment here," Zimmer told MSNBC TV.

Zimmer said the city's elecric utility vehicles were too big to make it down many of the flooded streets. After "begging and pleading" for equipment, she said, the National Guard told her Tuesday night some could arrive Wednesday morning.

In Breezy Point, a seaside community in Queens, N.Y., a massive fire of undetermined origin destroyed at least 110 homes and damaged 20 others . Firefighters had difficulty reaching the blaze because of the severe weather.

"To describe it as looking like pictures we've seen of the end of World War II is not overstating it," Bloomberg said. "The area was completely leveled. Chimneys and foundations were all that was left of many of these homes."

It remained impossible to put a dollar value on Sandy's destruction. Insured losses alone will run from $7 billion to $15 billion, according to an estimate published late Tuesday by AIR Worldwide, a catastrophe modeling firm.

"I think the losses will be almost incalculable," Christie said on NBC's TODAY show.

More targets in Sandy's sights
Even as attention was riveted on New York and New Jersey, Sandy had already moved on, remaining a dangerous storm as it dispersed north and south.

Get live coverage on the storm from Weather.com

About 90,000 customers were without power Tuesday in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, the Energy Ministry said. At least one death was reported in Toronto after a woman in her 50s was hit in the head by a sign Monday night, NBC News Channel reported.

Sandy hit the mountains of West Virginia and North Carolina with full-blown blizzards, part of a storm-generated snow system stretching as far west as Kentucky and Ohio, where several inches of snow fell in Champaign County.

Officials said the 14 to 16 inches that blanketed Newfound Gap, on the Tennessee-North Carolina line, was believed to be biggest October snowfall on record. Parts of eastern Virginia were under a blizzard warning through Wednesday morning, with snowfall at 1 to 2 inches an hour expected.

'The worst that we have ever experienced'
Tuesday's disaster declarations for New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut mean federal funds will be available to people affected by the storm.

"This was a devastating storm, maybe the worst that we have ever experienced," Bloomberg said, adding that schools would remained closed Wednesday.

The historic storm, which made landfall at 6:45 p.m. ET Monday, hurled a wall of water up to 13 feet high at the Northeast coast. It surged into Lower Manhattan and areas of Brooklyn, submerging entire streets and parks. A record tide of 13.88 feet was set at The Battery in Lower Manhattan on Monday night, breaking the previous record of 11.2 feet in 1821.

Slideshow: Sandy slams into East Coast (on this page)

The powerful storm flooded sections of Atlantic City and other areas of the New Jersey shore. Part of the Atlantic City boardwalk was washed away.

Atlantic City's casinos, which were closed Sunday afternoon, may not reopen until Thursday, officials said. Although they sustained only minor damage, the flooding and heavy damage to surrounding infrastructure means employees and customers can't get to them.

Officials estimated that the casinos alone are losing $5 million every day they're shuttered.

Hurricane Sandy grounds thousands of flights

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy grounded thousands of flights in the U.S. northeast Monday and upended travel plans across the globe, stranding passengers from Hong Kong to Europe. The massive storm threatens to bring a near halt to air travel for at least two days in a key region for both domestic and international flights.

Major carriers such as American Airlines, United and Delta cancelled all flights into and out of three area airports in New York, the nation's busiest airspace. According to the flight-tracking service FlightAware, nearly 7,500 flights had been canceled for Monday and Tuesday, almost all related to the storm.

Delays rippled across the U.S., affecting travelers in cities such as San Francisco to Chicago. Disruptions spread to Europe and Asia, where airlines canceled or delayed flights to New York and Washington from cities that are major travel hubs including London, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Businessman Alan Shrem was trying to return home to Boca Raton, Florida. His Monday morning Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to New York's Kennedy airport was canceled.

He learned he could be stuck in Hong Kong for nearly a week because the next available seat was Nov. 4. He was put on a waiting list for seats that could become available earlier.

"They just say: Yeah, it's a pretty big waiting list," said Shrem, throwing up his hands. In the meantime, he'll have to fork out $400 a night to continue staying at a nearby hotel. The airline won't pay for accommodation for stranded passengers if delays are weather related.

Forecasters say Hurricane Sandy is about 310 miles (505 kilometers) southeast of New York City, and the center of the storm is expected to be near the mid-Atlantic coast on Monday night. The National Hurricane Center said early Monday that the storm has top sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph), with higher gusts. Sandy is on track to collide with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic.

Airports in the metropolitan New York City area are open, but air carriers are not operating.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said Monday that travelers shouldn't even try to go to Kennedy, Newark Liberty, LaGuardia and Stewart airports

Air travel in the Northeast started getting complicated on Sunday, when passengers were reporting multi-hour wait times at airline call centers.

Eileen Merberg, 50, was booked on a United flight from her home in Rochester, N.Y. to New Orleans, connecting at Washington D.C.'s Dulles airport.

She received an email saying the Washington flight was canceled. United rebooked her first on a flight through Newark and, when that flight was also canceled, on another flight through Chicago.

By that point, she already had told the higher education conference that she was scheduled to speak at that she wouldn't be coming. She tried to cancel her flight over the phone. After two lengthy waits ? her cell phone battery ran out during the first one ? she just hung up.

International travelers would have to wait to get to the East Coast of the U.S. All flights from Paris to Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington ? a total of 14 ? were canceled. Air France has canceled four into JFK and two departures.

Frankfurt airport canceled 12 flights, with German carrier Lufthansa scrapping three to the Northeast and one out of Newark. British Airways had to cancel all its flights to and from New York, Newark, Baltimore, Washington DC, Boston and Philadelphia ? a total of 20.

Eight flights out of Tokyo's Narita International Airport to New York, Newark and Washington were canceled Monday.

Hong Kong's Cathay canceled its two daily flights to New York for Monday and Tuesday and Air India said its daily flights to Newark and JFK had halted since Sunday.

South Korean flag carrier Korean Air delayed a flight scheduled to leave Incheon International Airport for JFK on Monday by 22 hours. Asiana Airlines delayed its JFK flight from Seoul by 26 hours.

Health, Wellness and Fitness | Dayton City Paper

By Michael Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet Oz, M.D.

If sour news about added fructose ? the sugary menace that messes with your liver, boosts blood pressure and stiffens arteries ? has you reading food nutrition labels to uncover where it?s hiding, you?ve got the right idea, but nutrition labels don?t make it easy to figure out the amount of sugars added to foods. Sugars may be labeled as everything from fructose to agave nectar, dextrose or cane crystals. And although health advocates are calling for better labeling, we don?t think you should wait to start removing added sugars and sugar syrups ? like high-fructose corn syrup ? from your pantry and your plate. They have no health benefit, and data show they are almost always bad for your long-term health.

Why is added sugar bad for you? It alters essential proteins throughout the body, and that keeps ?em from being fully functional for you.? Case in point: People with diabetes get their hemoglobin A1C measured every three months or so to see how well they?re controlling their blood sugar levels. What they?re measuring is the sugar (glucose) that?s attached to hemoglobin proteins (part of your red blood cells).? If your glucose levels are too high (your reading will be above 7 percent) then the sugar is interfering with hemoglobin protein doing its job delivering of oxygen to your cells. High A1C levels let you know that glucose is damaging your blood vessels, organs, the brain ? you name it. But it?s not just people with diabetes who have to worry about sugar damage, and it?s not just high-fructose corn syrup that causes the problem; it?s any sugar in excess. So here?s our rundown of gotta-know-?em facts about sugars, and fructose in particular.

Fructose, found in high-fructose corn syrup and table sugar, as well as in brown sugar, honey, maple syrup and trendy ?alternative? sweeteners like agave syrup and turbinado sugar, taxes your body, because liver cells process fructose and turn excess fructose into fat. That wasn?t a problem 50 years ago, when we picked up a smidge of fructose from fruit, vegetables and the occasional slice of pie. Today, we consume four to five times more.

The new fructose fall-out:

?A fat-choked liver. An overload of fructose is a big reason why more than 30 percent of adults in North America have built up fat in the liver ? triggering liver disease and cirrhosis. A fructose overload zaps energy the liver needs to filter your blood and build essential proteins.

?Blood-pressure boost. Downing two-and-a-half cans of fructose-drenched soda a day increases your risk of high blood pressure by up to 77 percent, a major cause of stroke, heart attack, memory loss, wrinkles and impotence. Plus, fructose paves the way for type 2 diabetes by overloading cells that are inhibiting blood sugar absorption.

Ready to ditch this shocking sugar?

Switch to sugar-free sips. Steering clear of sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages ? such as fruit juice drinks, sweet teas and bottled smoothies ? could cut 40 percent of added sweeteners from your diet. (If you currently drink sweetened sodas, a diet soda or two a day is a better choice, saving you from up to 66 grams of HFCS.)

Spell dessert F-R-U-I-T! Tasty fresh or frozen (without sweeteners) fruit is packed with a truckload of nutrients. Yes, fruit?s sweetness comes in part from fructose, but the quantities are small (a cup of blackberries has 3.5 grams, a small apple about 9 grams) and the fiber helps keep blood sugar lower and steadier.

If you just can?t kick sugar cold turkey, spread out a max of 20 grams (a smidge more than three teaspoons) of pure cane sugar over the course of a day. And don?t eat anything with more than 4 grams per serving of any added sugar or consume more than 4 grams of added sugar in any hour. And remember: Zero-calorie sweeteners ? we like stevia ? in moderation are not as disastrous to your proteins, their functions or health as sugar.

Fast paced realty development on NH-24 | Magicbricks.com ...

Delhi/NCR

Major projects have been launched in the NH-24 area near Ghaziabad in recent times. Projects like Crossings Republik and other integrated township projects launched on NH-24 were the preferred locations for developers in Ghaziabad.

According to a report by Knight Frank, nearly 40% of the units launched are in the Rs 25-50 lakh ticket size with Ghaziabad contributing to nearly 34% of the number of project launched in the NCR in financial year 2012, followed by Gurgaon and Noida. The GDA (Ghaziabad Development Authority) has approved a number of housing projects which are in an advanced stage of construction, with some families already moving into some other projects.

Realty market on NH-24

Real estate experts say that once basic infrastructure like connecting roads, traffic control, transportation, etc, improve, the developing area of NH-24 will become one of the prime locations to live in the NCR. Realty players like Wave Infratech, SARE Homes, Landcraft, Ashiyana Homes, Ansal Buildwell, Aditya, Nitishree, Jaipuria, etc, have launched projects in this area.

UP Awas Vikas Parishad has also launched a highrise residential township project, Siddharth Vihar Yojna, on NH-24, just across Hindon and adjacent to Antriksh Sanskriti. UP Awas Vikas Parishad has acquired 700 acres for this project. Of this, 10 acres have been earmarked for Siddharth Vihar Yojna project. There will be three categories of flats in this project named Ganga, Yamuna and Hindon Enclave.

Rakesh Yadav, the managing director of Antriksh Group, says: ?Antriksh Sanskriti on the NH-24 is our new residential project. The project offers 2-, 3-, and 4BHK apartments with various facilities like a clubhouse, open and covered car parking, and 24?7 power backup. It promises you a stylish living with quality construction using the best material.?

Wave Infratech Ltd is developing a mega high-tech city, Wave City, over 4,500 acres on NH-24. Wave City will offer all the infrastructure and lifestyle amenities that a person aspires to see in his neighborhood, including mechanized cleaning and sweeping, closed loop city mass rapid transport system, 2-acre parks for every 400 people and a lake over 3 acres.

Manpreet Singh Chadha, the managing director of Wave Infratech, says: ?As prices on this stretch are still affordable, people are keen to buy here rather than at other places in the NCR. The response to the projects here is heartening and we have had scores of people lining up to book units in our project.?

SARE Homes (South Asian Real Estate) has recently launched Springview Heights on 88 acre in their integrated township called SARE Crescent Park on NH-24. Each of its six towers has a club, with one common club and a central park on a 10-feet high beautifully landscaped elevated podium, complete with a sky lounge terrace and other entertainment features.

David Walker, the executive director of SARE Homes, says: ?This GDA-approved township is in an advanced stage of construction. Families have already moved into Phase 1, while Phase 2 is nearing completion; construction is in full swing at Phase 3.?

Location Advantage

The forthcoming residential projects are well connected to national highways like NH-24 and NH-91 and are in close proximity to Raj Nagar and Kavinagar which have malls, shops, hotels, restaurants, petrol pumps, schools and colleges, and hospitals like Columbia Asia Hospital. Other facilities like a police station, a post office, bank branches and ATMs, the Ghaziabad Railway Station, an ISBT, and the proposed Metro station, etc, are easily accessible from the projects launched here.

The area is just off the busy highway and avoids pollution-related hazards. Other schools and colleges in close proximity to this area are Ryan International, Silver Line School, Gurukul School, ABES Engineering College, SIMS Management College, AKG Engineering College, New Era College, etc.

Connectivity

The UP government and the NHAI have taken a lot of initiative in easing traffic jams; the NH-24 is soon to be widened to eight lanes. To ease the local traffic, some important crossings at the busy NH-24 are getting a makeover. After UP Gate, an important T-point on NH-24 and Dabur Chowk, along with some of the ?chaurahas? (crossing) where local traffic is highly congested at peak hours like Kala Pathar, Abhay Khand and CISF Cut have been renovated. There is also a plan to convert the 20km stretch of the NH-24 up to Dasna Tiraha to six lanes from the existing four lanes.

Santosh Yadav, the vice-chairman of GDA, says: ?The NH-24 is another important expressway where a lot of construction is taking place. The road transport and highway ministry has finally moved a proposal to convert the Delhi border-Dasna stretch on NH-24 into an eight-lane corridor. The widening of the 20km corridor, which is used by over two lakh vehicles on a weekday, will bring relief to commuters who often get caught in long jams. This project has made this an ideal place for all those who are looking for commercial or residential solutions.?

Widening of NH-24

The Ghaziabad Development Authority has got the sanction to widen the NH-24 from four to six lanes. The Union surface transport ministry has also passed a proposal for three underpasses that were proposed by the GDA. The authority had recently sent a proposal to the NHAI to transfer land to the authorities. The GDA has already earmarked land for the underpasses and FOB (foot over-bridges) which would be built to decongest traffic. This will utilize existing underpasses at Shipra Mall and the carbon factory along the NH-24 and lay new service roads to divert traffic. The Noida authority is also planning a flyover from the old FNG highway apart from a semi-cloverleaf.

The three new underpasses proposed by the GDA would be constructed along the stretch from Lal Kuan to UP Gate. Besides, the authority has proposed laying of new service roads at Chhajarsi, CISF crossing and Kalapathar that would be aligned with the national highway in order to prevent congestion at these points and streamline traffic between Ghaziabad and Noida.

Three foot over-bridges have been planned at the district collectorate, Vijay Nagar and Khoda to facilitate movement of pedestrians. Traffic signal at Sector 62 is posing a major problem with thousands of commuters getting stuck daily in traffic during office hours; the authority is now planning to make the Sector 62 crossing signal-free with an underpass and two cloverleaves at the site.

Metro extension

Development authorities like the GDA, the UP Avas Vikas Parishad and the UPSIIDC have agreed to share the costs in a project to extend the Metro network (Metro?s second phase in Ghaziabad). According to the suggested pattern, the GDA will shell out Rs 466 crore while the municipal corporation, UP Avas Vikas Parishad, and UPSIIDC will contribute Rs 165 crore, Rs 195 crore and Rs 165 crore respectively.

The 9.41km route will have seven stations between Dilshad Garden and New Bus Stand and is expected to cater to around 87,000 daily commuters. The total cost of the project is around Rs 1,591 crore, of which UP government agencies will bear Rs 991 crore.

The GDA has also proposed several measures to generate funds for the Metro project. GDA?s share will come from infrastructure-development funds, re-development charges collected from commercial and residential areas along the Metro route, conversion charges imposed for change of land use on sick industrial units, levying additional development charges and charges imposed on builders near the Metro route for extending floor-area-ratio. The GDA has already cleared Rs 60 crore for a Metro station at Loni, which is also part of the proposed route.

Almond butter banana 'fudge'

Trying to cut down on sweets or maintain a healthier lifestyle? It may not be traditional fudge, but give this almond butter banana fudge a try and your sweet tooth won't know the difference.

By France Morissette and Joshua Sprague,?Beyond the Peel / October 29, 2012

Try this treat next time you're craving something sweet.

Beyond the Peel

I like to keep a healthier treat at home for those times when all I crave is a major kick to the face with sugar. Often I get cravings for a small bite of chocolate or something sweet. A weakness of mine is ice cream (a reason why I never have any in the house).

I also think it is crucial to have a small little treat around if you?re making your way over to a whole foods diet ? especially in the beginning stages. When processed foods get kicked to the curb in favor of whole natural foods, the outcome is a huge reduction of sugar and salt. These two key ingredients trick us into thinking these foods taste good. So as you eliminate processed foods you?ll no doubt be craving sugar and salt in a way you haven?t before because they were previously hiding in everything processed that was being consumed.

Arm yourself with some healthy or at least natural sweets, so when a sugar fix attacks you like a sale does to a shopaholic, you?ll have a stash of these to get you by. Your sweet tooth will be soothed and you?ll have successfully averted a grab for the Haagen Dazs.

Unbelievable almond butter banana ?fudge?

1/2 cup coconut oil

1/2 cup almond butter

?1/8? to 1/4 cup of raw honey

1/2 of a banana, mashed

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Place all the ingredients in a small pot. Heat over low heat until things get melty, about 30 seconds. Blend with an emulsion blender until the mixture is smooth. Alternately a food processor would work and you can skip the melting process but blend for longer.

Pour into a small 3- x5-inch mini loaf pan lined with parchment paper or pour into silicone molds. Allow the mixture to cool in the freezer or fridge into solid. Slice into small 1- x1-inch squares or slices. Because of the coconut oil, these will melt if not kept in the fridge or freezer.

DLNA doubles its certification of audio-video hardware in two years

DLNA doubles its certification of audio-video hardware in two years

Shopping for a new home AV setup with DLNA support? You've got twice as many options as you might have had just a few years ago. The Digital Living Network Alliance says that it has certified over 500 AV systems, handily doubling the number of devices it has certified since 2010. The organization issued a press release lambasting the dark ages of pre-DLNA AV setups and the "bulky tapes, memory cards, discs and CDs" that media lovers once had to contend with. "Consumers are demanding more from their digital content and looking for ways to access media from multiple devices on their home network," explains DLNA chairman and president Nidhish Parikh. "Certified AV systems are able to communicate with other consumer electronics... ...effectively expanding the boundaries of the digital home through easy interoperability." More connected devices for folks outside of the Apple ecosystem? Sounds good to us -- even if most devices pack in compatibility for both.
