Analysis: Republican debate gives feisty Perry chance to recover (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Rick Perry put the political obituaries on hold on Tuesday, firing a volley of attacks at Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney in his strongest and most energetic debate performance.

With his poll numbers sliding after a string of poor debates, Perry accused Romney of hypocrisy on immigration and belittled his record on jobs in a feisty and sometimes personal fight that seemed to energize the Texas governor.

Perry was aggressive and sure-footed in laying into Romney, putting the stumbling and sluggish showings of the last two debates behind him.

"That was a much more robust Rick Perry than we have seen in other debates. He had his best debate by far," Republican strategist Ron Bonjean said. "He was starting to get under Romney's skin."

Perry's strong fund-raising performance -- he raised $17 million in the third quarter, better than Romney's $14 million -- and Romney's failure to win over conservatives gives Perry hope more than two months before the first Republican nominating contest in Iowa.

"People have not made up their minds yet," Bonjean said. "Perry has an opportunity to recover. This looked very much like a Romney-Perry race tonight."

The Texas governor could be in a good position to win back the status of the anti-Romney conservative candidate among Republicans if, as expected, businessman Herman Cain falls in the polls after his recent surge.

Perry launched his attacks early in the debate, turning to face Romney and resurrect charges from the 2008 presidential campaign that the former Massachusetts governor had used a landscaping company that employed illegal immigrants.

"The idea that you stand here before us and talk about that you're strong on immigration is on its face the height of hypocrisy," Perry told Romney, who threw back his head and laughed at the charge.

"I don't think I've ever hired an illegal in my life," Romney replied. "This has been a tough couple of debates for Rick, and I understand that, and so you're going to get testy."

ACRIMONY

Perry also questioned Romney's record on jobs as Massachusetts governor and said it did not compare to his accomplishments in Texas. The two men, standing side by side in the middle of the set, frequently interrupted each other in what became an increasingly acrimonious showdown.

At one point, Romney turned to CNN moderator Anderson Cooper with a plaintive plea to try to get him to make Perry stop talking.

Perry also attacked surging rival Cain, who has capitalized on Perry's slide by gaining in polls with conservative support for his "999" tax plan that would scrap the existing tax code and create a 9 percent income, sales and business tax.

Cain took heavy criticism for his tax plan from all of the candidates, suffering his moment in the political hot seat after largely sliding through earlier debates unchallenged.

"We saw Herman Cain humbled a bit tonight," Republican strategist Ford O'Connell said. "That could give Perry an opening to recover."

The pressure was on Perry, who surged into the poll lead after entering the race in August but saw his momentum erased by poor debates and by criticism of his Texas policies on immigration and on vaccinations for young girls.

Perry signaled his more aggressive approach from the first moment of the debate, concluding his introduction by describing himself as "an authentic conservative, not a conservative of convenience" -- a clear shot at Romney.

Social conservatives and Tea Party activists have been suspicious of Romney's past as governor of liberal Massachusetts, where he backed a healthcare plan similar to Obama's national overhaul and once supported abortion rights.

Romney still has clear advantages in a Republican race that he has been planning for since a failed 2008 presidential bid against eventual nominee John McCain, giving him a huge head start in organization.

His smooth debate style and seasoned campaign-trail experience also have helped him avoid the pitfalls that have tripped up Perry and U.S. Representative Michele Bachmann.

But Perry showed the race may be a little tougher and more aggressively fought than it has been.

"If Perry had another debate tonight like the last two, people would have been counting him out," Bonjean said. "But the people who have been unhappy with his performances now have something to think about."

U.N. rights office against proposed Saleh immunity (Reuters)

GENEVA (Reuters) ? The United Nations human rights office said on Tuesday that any power transfer deal in Yemen should not include an amnesty for President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose security forces are accused of killing largely peaceful protesters and other crimes.

A proposed power transfer plan brokered by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) would offer immunity to Saleh and those serving under him in exchange for his stepping down.

The U.N. Security Council is expected to make a decision this week on a resolution to "strongly condemn" the government's human rights violations. The draft resolution, obtained by Reuters in New York, urges Saleh to "immediately sign and implement" the plan by the six-nation GCC.

"We've not seen the details of the initiative put forth by the GCC so we can't comment on the specifics of that proposed deal. However, international law is pretty clear on this issue. It prohibits the use of amnesties that prevent the prosecution of individuals for war crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity or gross violations of human rights," U.N. rights spokesman Rupert Colville told a news briefing in Geneva.

"So that's the general position on amnesties which would apply in this situation, as in any other," he added, speaking in response to a reporter's question.

The office of U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay condemns the killing of largely peaceful protesters in the cities of Sanaa and Taiz by Yemeni security forces wielding indiscriminate force, Colville said.

At least 34 people have been killed in the last four days, including six on Tuesday, in the intensifying crackdown.

"In addition to those killed, hundreds of people have been reportedly injured by the disproportionate use of force against unarmed protesters," Colville said.

An international, independent investigation was required to hold perpetrators accountable and render justice to victims.

"We are extremely concerned that security forces continue to use excessive force in a climate of impunity for crimes that are resulting in heavy loss of life and injury, despite repeated pledges by the government to the contrary," he added.

Amnesty International has said that Saleh should not be immune from prosecution and those responsible for extrajudicial executions, torture and enforced disappearances should be brought to justice as part of any transition agreement.

Saleh, who says he is ready to step down but wants to ensure that control of the country is put in "safe hands," has rejected the GCC plan three times.

Saleh, who has ruled the impoverished country for 33 years, has stayed in office despite 10 months of mass protests against his rule inspired by pro-democracy unrest across the Arab world.

Opposition to him has turned increasingly violent and organized, threatening to pitch Yemen into all-out civil war.

The U.N. rights office also called on armed opponents of Saleh's government to remove weapons from public spaces being used by peaceful protesters and to "stop launching armed attacks from densely-populated areas."

'til death do I part. [ic]

Just about two months after he'd been accepted into the position, people working at Dawson & Creeke Law Firm agreed that a certain higher up they worked for was stern, firm, and not easy to get along with. When the rumours spread that he started taking an interest in Aubrey Lewis, however, the whole place was buzzing. Nonchalant but very much aware, he watched as the ladies gossiped about her not being more good-looking (or, to put in their exact words, "hot"), or the guys wondering why he espied the "cutest" woman from Records. He just didn't care anymore. It sent his heart racing, each time he saw her work, caught a glance of her during coffee break, or watched as she left the building, her parking space being adjacent to his. Four years later, those same employees who called him static would've been surprised at what they'd said about him. In fact, they'd never seen anyone as happy as he was. Yes, he was kinder to his colleagues, but despite that he was somewhat hated. Again. His life was all peaches and cream now, and they all had dull dinner alone, or with family they just aren't satisfied with.

William Black lived the life he'd always dreamt of. Marriage was just the cherry on top.

He shifted away from the light streaming from the small gap between the curtains and shining on his face. Almost as if it were a reflex action, he wrapped his arms around his Aubrey, her snuggling back. He planted a small kiss on the nape of her neck and got up, slowly of course, as he usually did on Saturday mornings. He wasn't much of a morning person but he tried as best as he could to remedy his morning blues. First off, get some breakfast, curl up on the couch and read a book, maybe fall asleep again. That was more like it.

Aubrey was all he could think about for some odd reason. Even as he made breakfast for the both of them, all he could hear in his head was the sound of her laughter, and the two words he'd been wishing and hoping to hear in their four years of being together: "I do." Perhaps it was the hangover from the wedding; he just never thought he'd even get to that point. It was even a wonder that she fell for him. Irritating, stern, pragmatic, strict. How was she able to bear with his character? Why did she even choose him in the first place? She had Tom Altman; she'd dated him before and he was more than aware that they hadn't really gotten over each other. There was Dave Rothko. The... Oh, he wasn't so sure about what to make of him. He could be the office asshole, but he was the office gofer. How was he able to land that job?

[i]Kss[i], went his finger. It took him a while to realize he'd been accidentally while frying up some bacon. He screamed in temporary agony, muffling the sounds of his groans with his mouth as he went to run it under a cold tap. "Shit," he groaned.

Single Parents Can Get A Degree Nowadays Thanks To Financial Aid

More and more single parents in the United States today are seeking higher education. The task of getting a degree while raising children alone is not easy, and tuition is often cost-prohibitive to single-income families. Single parents should know that they are certainly not alone. Over a quarter of children in this country are reared by more than 13 million single mothers and fathers. There are many resources available for financially-needy parents who wish to return to school to increase their income and better provide for their children. Taking the next step in your life can be stressful but with a little bit of information on government grants you?ll be better armed to handle it.

Many single parents wonder if it is worth it to attend college. The financial struggle of raising a family while paying tuition can be daunting, but be aware that this struggle is usually short term. It is possible for a college graduate to earn nearly twice what a high school graduate makes over the course of a lifetime. A parent with a college degree is ultimately better prepared to provide for his or her children.

Sometimes, even if a student retains employment while attending college courses, the cost of higher education is prohibitive to the single parent. Grants for single parents will bridge the gap between personal income and the cost of a college degree. The first thing a candidate should do is fill out a FAFSA application, which is available on January 1st each year. This is a free application for federal aid. Awards are based on a family?s income, so these parents usually have a good chance of receiving some assistance.

Federal Pell Grants are granted to financially-needy students in the amount of up to $4,000 per year. A grant is money that does not have to be paid back. The earlier you apply for federal assistance, the better chance you have of receiving a Pell Grant, as they are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.

It?s possible that the college or university you are considering grants financial awards to single parents. Many institutions seek to encourage needy parents to return to school. Check with the financial aid offices of colleges you are interested in. They should be able to further explain the opportunities for grants and scholarships available to single parents.

Did you know that many organizations, businesses, and philanthropists have scholarship funds available to students from all walks of life? If you check out a scholarship database, you will probably find opportunities specifically for single parents to win money for college. The possibility of being awarded anything from hundreds to thousands of dollars for college expenses is worth the effort of doing some research and applying. Searching for undergraduate scholarship shouldn?t require much time or energy, and it could prove to be worth the effort.

Be resourceful when looking for sources of college aid to supplement any institutional scholarships and federal assistance you may receive. Your place of employment is a good place to check, if you work for a larger company. Many companies award scholarships to employees who wish to earn a degree. Ask your HR representative for more information. If you have a relative who has served in the military, you may even be eligible for a military scholarship. Explore all options, and don?t be afraid to ask if an opportunity exists for funding.

Returning to school is financially difficult for most people, let alone single parents. If you are a parent who has decided to pursue a college degree, the next few years may be a challenge for you. However, there are numerous sources of aid for you to tap into. In the long run, you will be glad you made the decision to invest in your degree. With the economy the way it is these days, spending a little time researching college grant can have a huge impact.

Americans recall personal impacts of Jobs' vision (AP)

CUPERTINO, Calif. ? Steve Jobs urged people to think different, and wowed them when his own different thinking put thousands of songs in their pockets, the power of the Internet at their fingertips and a whole world of possibilities in the palm of their hands.

For many, his vision resulted in more than another gadget. The tools inspired careers, opened doors for communication and fueled a new economy.

As Jobs admirers pay tribute to the computer wizard, the signs of his influence can be seen everywhere: A farmer in Arkansas monitors crops from the field on his iPhone. A North Carolina father develops an app that helps him communicate with his disabled son. A Silicon Valley technology worker uses an Apple program to disseminate lectures to people across the globe.

Brent Izutsu, the manager of Stanford on iTunes U, fondly recalls Jobs' stirring 2005 commencement address to Stanford University graduates.

"In his commencement address, which I've watched many times, Jobs mentioned you might as well do what you love because you have to do that for most of your life," Izutsu said. "Well, I guess that's what I'm doing every day. And that's thanks to him. It makes you feel good."

The Associated Press interviewed people across the country to see how their lives were affected by Jobs, the answers reveal his vast influence as a technology pioneer, an employer and an innovator.

___

APPLE IN THE EARLY DAYS

Jonathan Knowles describes the effect Jobs had on his life with one word: dominoes.

"One thing touched off something else and that touched off something else," Knowles said.

The first domino was the first Macintosh. Its ease of use and simple design hooked him, and that was when Knowles turned away from the biological sciences and to computer science.

Knowles was on the faculty at the Claremont Colleges when Apple Inc. recruited him 20 years ago. He moved to the San Francisco Bay area and more dominoes kept falling. He met his wife, and is now deeply involved in his community.

He worked for Apple for eight years in project management and consulting and ultimately worked closely with Jobs for about two years. He said while the technology drew him in, it was Jobs' passion that kept him engaged.

"I can't be the only one, of course, who credits Jobs with so much," Knowles said.

"It was his drive that made it happen and inspired me," Knowles added. "I'm just some guy out there in the world who sees this computer that he forced through with a Henry Ford-type attitude. He knew what people wanted even if they didn't. He knew what was possible."

___

INSPIRING CREATIVITY

Rene Lee says if not for Jobs, he might well be in engineering school now. The 26-year-old, who is studying at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, says while he was choosing his course of study in the early 2000s, Apple was just coming back after a slump.

"If it hadn't been for their success, it would have been a lot harder to convince my parents that art and design is a viable career choice," Lee said.

Lee was fortunate to work for Jobs during an internship last summer. He never met the man whom he says had a "huge impact" on his life, but his vision and presence were felt in everything that was worked on.

"Apple is a great example of how creativity can set you apart," Lee said. "Technology is not enough. It's all in how you humanize the technology."

___

A VITAL CONNECTION TO DISABLED SON

For Paul Pauca, admiration for Apple innovations goes beyond technology. They enabled him to help his disabled son.

Pauca, a computer science professor at Wake Forest University, and some of his students developed a $10 app for the iPad and iPhone last year called VerbalVictor. It helps his young son, Victor, and others with severe disabilities communicate.

The program was designed after the Paucas had a series of disappointments with specialized devices intended for people with disabilities.

Pauca's son, Victor, was born with a rare genetic disease shared only by about 50 other people in the U.S. It delays speech, among other skills.

The app allows his parents to snap pictures and record phrases to go with them, which in turn become "buttons" on the touch screen. An example would be a picture of a playground paired with the phrase "I want to go out and play,"

"If it wasn't for Steve Jobs, this wouldn't be possible," Pauca said. "For people with disabilities, the iPad, the iPhone, the App Store ? it was really a revolution."

His son now brings an iPod Touch and iPad to school every day so he can communicate with the teachers and fellow students at his school.

___

APPLES IN COTTON FIELDS

Nathan Reed and his friends who farm in eastern Arkansas consider two brands golden: John Deere and Apple.

Reed, 31, grows cotton and soybeans on about 6,000 acres in Marianna, Ark., in the Mississippi River Delta. He purchased his first iPhone more than two years ago, and almost all the farmers he knows also have iPhones.

Reed uses the phone to check storage bins to see if his soybeans are too wet or too dry. He can watch the temperature whether he's in Marianna or out of the country. "The old method was to guess and turn your fans on and off when you thought you needed to," Reed said.

Reed uses the Field Notes app to monitor how much pesticide is used on each crop. And he reads farm news and market reports while standing in his fields. That's where he saw an alert about Jobs' death.

Reed said he and other farmers trust Jobs' creations in the same way most trust John Deere for combines and tractors.

"His products touch a very large majority of people in the world on a daily basis," Reed said. "It's pretty amazing that one guy was able to do all that."

___

APPLE ALL AROUND

On Wednesday night, as much of the world was learning about Jobs' death, Katy Culver was sitting in an emergency room with her son, who had a severely broken arm. She looked at the technology around her and was struck by the degree to which Jobs had impacted her life.

A hospital specialist was lifting her son's spirits by helping him play Angry Birds on an iPad with his good arm. Doctors appeared to be reviewing X-rays on a MacBook. And Culver used her iPhone to alert friends and family.

"It just hit me in that moment, how much his visionary technologies have changed my life ? the way I communicate with family and friends, the way I work with my students, the way I relate to my kids," said Culver, a journalism professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Culver recalled being impressed after her introduction to a Macintosh computer in 1991 when she became a teaching assistant at UW-Madison. She was especially fascinated by the computer mouse.

"I remember remarking, `Wow, this is a much better way to use a computer,'" she said. "Apple technologies have touched every part of my life. As a parent, my work life, everything from humor to surgery, my world is so different because of Apple."

___

PROTEST AND REMEMBRANCE

Some of Jobs' products are among the tools that help Wall Street generate billions of dollars. But protesters in lower Manhattan saw no irony in mourning, or celebrating, the billionaire while opposing many others who are just as wealthy.

The cluster of computerized protesters has been camped out for weeks in a park near Wall Street, telling the world how they believe greed destroyed the economy.

"I dislike billionaires with a complete disregard for the future of the human race, to make money," said Thorin Caristo, taking a deep puff from his cigarette as he sat on a stone wall.

There are billionaires ? and then there was "this different, quiet billionaire," Caristo said. "He was a beneficial member of the human community."

We were on our way to the caves, but the car was having some problems Chuck, so we took it in to a local repair shop and I needed to get your oil change. n ? 10 minutes here, took an hour or less. Anyway, all the cars in this auto shop were BMW or Mercedes, which is sick! And there are plenty of children who are driving some nice ass cars that can not even understand the value of cash ? well, I have that problem ? lol. Once the oil change was done was quite late so we decided to grab a bite to eat since the caves closed (we?re going to do tomorrow). So we decided to do some ethnic food and was a. .. Pizza Hut! Hahaha, seriously, that was all Halal meat too! I have a beef lovers of thin crust pizza and Ahmed and split a pizza Chuck Supreme. Before ?

Small business finance has never been easy, but was it always this challenging? Not too long ago, entrepreneurs relied heavily on the support of their banker, and not just for funds but for guidance as well.

Banks today are more robust than ever. So do they still champion small business? The numbers say ?probably not.? But there is evidence that the money and mentorship is still out there ?- but where?

We take a look at the three leading sources of business capital today ?- Banks, Venture Capital and Angels. We?ll compare not only how much money is going to whom, but also identify common considerations, compromises and benefits of each.

A Peek at Small Business in America

  • 30 million small businesses in America
  • 62 percent of small business owners would be unable to qualify for a bank loan right now (and only 20 percent would qualify for an SBA loan).

Debt vs Equity financing

Especially for small or new business, this choosing between debt and equity often comes down to personal preference between control and indebtedness.

  • small business lending defined
  • loans of less than $1 million;
  • micro business lending is a subset that includes loans of less than $100,000;
  • and macro small business lending is the subset of larger small business loans between $100,000 and $1 million.

Both venture capitalists and angel investors are looking for capital growth and revenue increases and evidence that your business can deliver continued growth over time, to provide a return on investment. How these investors choose to participate in the business varies greatly.

Venture Capital ? VC

Venture capital is a fund raising technique for companies who are willing to exchange equity in their company in return for money to grow or expand their business.

  • it can be raised for all types of business, both technology and non-.
  • typically provided through venture capital funds
  • invests across stages ? from the early stage seed venture, to later stage financing.
  • an important source of equity for start-up companies
  • usually require a high rate of return on their investment (20%+ per annum)
  • financing typically in the range of $500,000 to many millions of dollars.

Angel Investors

An angel investor generally wants less control of your company and a slower return on investment, however the criteria for investment are likely to be similar to VC. Angel investor groups are great sources of private capital and frequently invest angel money into new companies.

  • usually invested directly by one or a small number of private individuals
  • typically, angel investors choose small companies that are too speculative for bank loans and too young for venture capital

Angels ? Deals by Sector

  • Sector Healthcare Software Biotech Industrial/Energy Retail IT Services. Those deals, respectively are broken down to 30%, 16%, 15%, 8%, 5%, and 5%.
  • Angel investments continue to be a significant contributor to job growth with the creation of 370,000 new jobs in the United States in 2010, or 6 jobs per angel investment.
  • 61,900 companies received angel investments in 2010, an 8.2% increase over the 57,200 entrepreneurial ventures that received angel funds in 2009. Angels investments in the U.S. totaled $20.1 billion in 2010, a 14% increase over 2009.

Business Loans from the Banks

Some of the nation?s biggest banks this month pledged to boost lending to small firms by an extra $20 billion over the next three years. In 2011, loans guaranteed by the Small Business Administration hit record highs. In 2009, it was $8.6 billion; in 2010, it was $12.4 billion; in 2011, it was $18 billion.

Earlier this month, Wells Fargo became the first lender to issue more than $1 billion in SBA loans in a single year. The next top nine lenders combined have issued some $3.5 billion.

Conventional lending to small businesses by large banks continues to tighten. A recent analysis found

  • approval rates by large banks dropped to 9.35% in August, down from 9.8% in July.
approvals by smaller banks were above 40% in August, though also down from July.

Buyer Beware

A recent study by the Pew Charitable Trusts has found that American households receive more than 10 million offers per month for business credit cards, and the majority of those cards have ?potentially harmful terms that would not be legal on those labeled for consumer use.? That?s because consumer credit cards fall under the jurisdiction of the Credit CARD Act of 2009, while business credit cards (the primary form of financing available to most microbusinesses) remain unprotected.

However, there are good business credit cards out there with good terms. And in some circumstance, it makes sense to get a business line of credit, especially if there are big returns to be had.
